iPhone pre-orders believed to be doing 'very well'
Virgin Mobile US is opening its first-ever retail stores in Chicago tomorrow in support of its iPhone launch, Bloomberg reports. The carrier is starting with just 10 locations, but says it plans to open more around the country should the initial venture prove successful. Typically Virgin has relied on third-party vendors like Best Buy to sell phones and service to people not ordering through its website.
Third-party retailer makes rare expansion
A third-party Apple retailer, MacMall, is planning to expand outside of southern California for the first time, notes AppleInsider. The company currently has three stores in southern California, but is planning to open a shop at 329 West Grand Avenue in Chicago, Illinois on March 31st. To promote the effort the first 500 people to visit after the 9AM opening will be entered into a 10AM drawing for products like a MacBook Air; other drawings will take place throughout the day, and between today and March 30th, although the pre-opening raffles are being aimed at business customers.
Thieves grab $30,000 in computer gear
The Main Place Apple Store in Naperville, Illinois has been robbed for a second time in less than a year. Local reports say that after smashing through the glass front doors, two people proceeded to dump an estimated $30,000 worth of products into containers. The suspects have not yet been caught or identified, as they were wearing gloves and ski masks at the time.
Part of national trend
The New York City public school system has ordered over 2,000 iPads, the New York Times reveals. The total cost of the arrangement is valued at $1.3 million. As an example of the distribution, 300 of the tablets are reported to have gone to Kingsbridge International High School, located in the Bronx. The Times suggests that the number is "enough for all 23 teachers and half of the students to use at the same time."
Outlet includes unusual outdoor gathering area
The construction of the Lincoln Park Apple Store, opening tomorrow, has resulted in some major changes to its surrounding area, the Chicago Tribune writes. Apple paid about $3.9 million to help refurbish the nearby North/Clybourn transit station, which the Tribune claims was "so dingy" that Red Line riders would deliberately get off at a nearby stop to avoid it. The station is close to the poor Cabrini-Green housing project, which is undergoing a demolition and relocation program.
Exploits seldom-used design
Apple has announced that its Lincoln Park retail store, long under construction, will finally open to the public on October 23rd at 10AM. The shop is located at 801 W. North Avenue in Chicago, which is also near the intersection of North Clybourn and North Halstead. Regular store hours will run from 9AM to 9PM Monday through Saturday, and from 11AM to 7PM on Sunday. The first workshops start on Sunday, October 24th.
Lincoln Park store due to open this fall
Information has emerged on two future Apple Stores, including what may be the first location in Edinburgh, Scotland. Apple is reported to be in "detailed" talks with Edinburgh planning officials regarding an outlet on Princes Street, situated downtown. The Herald Scotland notes that Apple may be "as little as weeks away" from submitting final plans to the Edinburgh City Council. Several potential spots are speculated on, including one next to an Urban Outfitters, and others next to a Debenhams or an HMV.
Lincoln Park outlet waiting on outside work
Progress has been made in the development of three upcoming Apple Stores, reports say. Two of them are located in Spain; a Madrid outlet will be situated in the Xanadú shopping center next to Nike Madrid, and has already had a black construction facade erected. In Barcelona, meanwhile, a similar facade has been put in place inside the La Maquinista mall. No opening dates have been set, but construction is unlikely to go on any longer than the fall.
Renovation meant to aid new Apple Store
Apple has agreed to spend over $4 million on renovating a Chicago subway station, according to Chicago Business. The station is situated near the intersection of North and Clybourn, where Apple is set to build another retail store for the city, measuring some 15,000 square feet with design by long-time partner Bohlin Cywinski Jackson. The lease on the real estate is expected to cost Apple at least $700,000 annually.
VA, IL, GA Apple Stores
Apple is launching three new retail stores in the near future, two of which will debut on Saturday, August 15th. The first is in Reston, Virginia, with a 10AM Eastern opening time but few other details. It is located at 11900 Market Street, near Reston Town Center and the corner of Discovery.
Second Chicago Apple Store
A location has been chosen for the site of Apple's second retail store in Chicago, a city publication reports. The company has cemented a $700,000 annual lease for land at the corner of North, Clybourn and Halsted, formerly the home of a gas station. In doing so Apple should be able to build a shop measuring some 15,000 square feet, designed by local firm and frequent Apple partner Bohlin Cywinski Jackson.
