Android 2.3 out for Euro Desire HD, Incredible S
HTC Europe revealed on its support site that the Desire HD and Incredible S have begun receiving the Android 2.3 update over the air. Phones will get notifications advising users they can now begin the download. HTC is urging them to do so over Wi-Fi or an unlimited data plan.
Droid Incredible 2 gets early unboxing by Wirefly
A video unboxing (since pulled) of the upcoming HTC Droid Incredible 2 smartphone reveals some finalized specs of the phone. Online electronics retailer Wirefly learned that the device will launch at Verizon on April 28, though Verizon itself hasn't yet officially confirmed this. The handset is in many ways similar to the existing Incredible S we reviewed but with dual-mode CDMA and GSM for use outside of the US.
HTC Incredible S ships in Canada at Bell, Virgin
Canadian telecommunications and cable provider Bell is now shipping the HTC Incredible S. Virgin Mobile, Bell's sibling, has also now launched the device. At either provider, the phone costs $500 CAD ($519) contract-free or $100 CAD ($104) on a three-year contract with a voice and data plan. Bell requires a minimum $50 CAD ($52) per month plan while Virgin users can get a $40 CAD plan ($41.50).
Virgin Mobile says Incredible S is coming soon
Canadian wireless provider Virgin Mobile just announced on Twitter that it will soon launch the HTC Incredible S. Exactly when it will be out isn't known, but it's likely to mirror Bell's release on April 14. Virgin will price it at $500 CAD ($512), however, contract-free, according to a leaked Virgin inventory screen.
Incredible S bootloader locked down by HTC
Developers will be disappointed to learn that HTC's Incredible S was found to ship with a similar failsafe system as in the company's Thunderbolt smartphone. This means developers can't yet change the OS of the device, and the failsafe is installed by HTC itself, not provider Verizon, as previously believed in the Thunderbolt's case. This includes a check for the signature of the recovery image, and failure to find it won't allow access to the recovery partition.
Incredible S in red shows up on Danish website
The HTC Incredible S may soon be available in red, supplanting the black version, if a listing from an online Danish electronics retailer is any indication. The handset is otherwise identical to the regular version, though release dates or a price in Denmark remains unknown. Unsubsidized, the black Incredible S costs $550 in the US for an edition with non-native 3G.
HTC to bring Android 2.3 to four phones in Spring
An HTC spokesperson recently told SlashGear that the Desire HD, Desire Z, Desire and Incredible S will get a software update to Android 2.3 this spring. The Desire is the oldest handset, and this latest news should be good for owners, as the device was earlier said to get the update later than the spring and after the Desire S launches.
