Crisis Trojan yet to appear in the wild

Security firm Intego's virus team has identified a new trojan horse malware targeting the Mac platform. The trojan, called Crisis, has yet to be seen in the wild, but Intego says it is engineered to make analysis of the malware difficult for security experts. Intego has stressed alertness regarding the new malware, as it appears to be able to bypass OS X security features and install itself with no user interaction.

VirusBarrier for iOS seeks infected files on iPhone, iPad

App scans downloads, email, multi-app files

Intego is launching an app for the the iPhone and iPad, VirusBarrier for iOS, that can scan some of the files on iOS devices for viruses and malware. The app is geared at preventing an infected file from traveling between machines with the iPhone as a conduit, since iOS in general has had the same resilience against malware and viruses as its sibling Mac OS X -- unlike its closest competitor Android, which has seen spreading malware and security issues.

Intego introduces Backup Express app on Mac App Store

Backup app runs scripts, supports volume sync

Intego has launched new backup software for the Mac, Intego Backup Express 1.0. The app will back up specific or all files from a User Folder, as well as other disks and volumes where the user has the proper permissions, and can be used to keep folders or volumes in sync across two Macs. The program supports user-created backup scripts, incremental and versioned backups, and exclusions for files, folders and file-types among other features.

Intego outs Mac malware, HellRTS, with backdoor capability

Malware can set up its own server on infected Mac

Intego has sent out an alert to a new form of Mac malware called HellRTS. It is a low risk backdoor code allowing remote users to take control of a computer. The RealBasic-built, universal code can set up its own server on an infected Mac, configure a server port and password. It duplicates itself, using the names of Mac applications, adding the new applications to a user's login items, ensuring that it starts up at login. It sends e-mail via its own mail server, contacting a remote server to give access to an infected Mac.

Antivirus software offers new detection methods

Intego has released an update to its network protection software, VirusBarrier Server. Version 3 adds a variety of new features, including 64-bit support and remote GUI administration with full access to settings and configurations. The system allows administrators to manage multiple servers using the remote interface. The update also integrates a two-way firewall, configurable using presets or individual rule-based settings.

The upcoming Snow Leopard update reportedly contains new anti-malware functionality, according to the Mac security company Intego. A number of beta testers have noticed a new warning screen that alerts users to malicious code. A leaked screenshot shows an alert dialog for an RSPlug Trojan contained in a disk image downloaded through Safari.

LaCie on Tuesday announced the introduction of the 2big Quadra storage device with a quad interface that includes a fast 3Gbps eSATA port, FireWire 800 and 400 as well as USB 2.0. The dual-bay device can hold as much as 3TB, has a maximum transfer speed of 165MBps and has four RAID modes for enhanced data security. Like the earlier 4Big Quadra, the 2Big features a design penned by Neil Poulton and its drive bays are hot-swappable for no interruptions.

Partnership adds Intego software to LaCie products

A new partnership has been formed that will see Intego's backup software included with all of LaCie's new storage devices. Intego will be providing two backup programs, Backup Assistant and Backup Manager Pro, both derived from Personal Backup X5. Assistant will be included with all LaCie hard drives and some of its network storage devices, and Manager Pro will be provided with LaCie’s professional network storage devices.
