Square rebuts VeriFone on mobile payment security

Square founder Jack Dorsey in a letter rebuffed the claims made in VeriFone's smear attack on his Android and iOS mobile payment readers. The accusation of easy data 'skimming' was "not a fair or accurate claim" and overlooked the basic reality of credit cards. Anyone who you give a credit card already has enough to get information, and no encrypted system would stop this, Dorsey said.

JPMorgan says tablet cannibalizing PCs more

JPMorgana analyst Mark Moskowitz warned on Monday that tablets were only likely to cannibalize notebooks much more in the next two years. With as many as 18.9 percent of tablets having replaced a netbook or notebook in 2010, he expected that rate to surge to 32.1 percent in 2011 and 35.1 percent in 2012. Android 3.0 and the imminent new iPad would both eat further into computers, especially the netbook market, the analyst estimated.

Some even report satisfaction with cable plans

Over a quarter of current cable subscribers would consider switching from cable to Internet-based video, according to a consumer survey conducted by JP Morgan. A separate question aimed to discover if Netflix Watch Instantly users were more likely to drop their pay TV subscriptions. As expected, Netflix subscribers who stream content several times each month were much more likely to consider switching away from cable.

Acer, HP, Lenovo ordering far fewer PCs

Computer shipments have suddenly "fallen off a cliff" in the past month, JP Morgan analyst Christopher Danely said in a new research note. Checking with Taiwan suppliers, he understood that Acer, HP and Lenovo have all cut their orders for notebooks, chips or both as of July. Other companies weren't named, but their positions in the top five PC builders points to others being affected as well.
