Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 seemingly made official

New sleuthing by Mobil.se around the Mobile World Congress venue has supported notions that Samsung's real highlight for the show will be a Galaxy Note 10.1. A photo of the tablet includes text below it refers to "It's 10.1" as well as the familiar "It's Galaxy Note" line attached to the current Galaxy Note. The screen on the tablet shows what looks to be handwritten scrapbook contents.

Samsung leaves odd signs of big Note tablet plans

Samsung in odd mentions may have confirmed that its follow-up for the Galaxy Tab 10.1 may revolve around pen input. Both a briefly available Developer Day guide (since pulled) and a Back Stage casting call have made references to a "Galaxy Note 10.1." While possibly an accident, the unlikelihood of making the same mistake twice in different sections suggests that Samsung was certain of the product name and had leaked it instead.

The executive argued to Mobile Magazine that HTC had "tried to do too much" in 2011 and oversaturated the field with devices. This year would be about making "something special," or having fewer but more distinctive devices.

Samsung Galaxy Tab may get S Pen too

A conversation with Samsung product marketing manager Ryan Bidan late Tuesday has hinted that the next Galaxy Tab line may make interface a core selling point with a possible return to the early days of tablets. The division lead told Laptop that he expected the S Pen from the Galaxy Note to make its way to tablets. Slates and other devices would also get "3D gestures" using the front camera, face recognition, and voice in certain circumstances.

OnLive switches on tablet, phone apps and gamepad

Acting on promises from E3, OnLive late Wednesday launched its mobile gameplay apps. The iPad, iPhone, and Android apps are gradually rolling out and should let gamers play, not just watch, titles either using the touchscreen or with the Universal Wireless Controller. It normally needs Wi-Fi, but the shipping version now works with any LTE-equipped tablet, including the HTC Jetstream, Motorola Xoom, and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 LTE.

iSuppli: Kindle Fire already 13.8% of tablets, iPad at 66%

Estimate has Amazon poaching other Android devices

The Amazon Kindle Fire has already occupied much of the Android tablet market in just one season, IHS iSuppli estimated Friday. At 3.9 million of the mini Android tablets, it would have 13.8 percent of the entire tablet share for the fall. Researchers are modeling for Apple to ship 18.6 million iPads, which would be enough to get it 65.6 percent of the tablet space.

AT&T claims its LTE phones will be thinner than Verizon's

AT&T will use circuit-switch fallback technology

AT&T chief executive Ralph de la Vega told CNET its 4G LTE handsets will be the thinnest on the market. The handsets are due to arrive this fall, and AT&T waited for the technology that allows them to be thing while providing a longer battery life. The exec said its circuit-switch fallback tech and relates to the handset switching to 3G coverage when its leaves the 4G coverage area.

HTC Flyer tablet gets permanent price cut to 300

The struggle for non-iPad tablets continued on Friday after Best Buy said it would permanently drop the price of the HTC Flyer down to $300. The cut is a steep $200 drop from its original price and will be permanent. Both online and retail stores should see the cut take effect October 1.

Rogers significantly expanded its LTE-based 4G service with three new cities and details of its tablet and smartphone plans. The once Ottawa-only service is now live in Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver, covering most of the Canadian population. The expansion is matched by a new, much stronger promo plan that lets users pay $53 per month for 10GB if they sign up for a three-year contract.

HTC's American president Martin Fichter touched on his earlier interview with a rare follow-up elaborating on his position. He claimed that he not only didn't see HTC setting out to make an "iPhone killer" but that he actively discouraged the idea in the office. The goal was not to replace Apple but to target those people who didn't fit in Apple's world.

Canaccord lowers PlayBook targets on low sales

Canaccord Genuity analyst T. Michael Walkley dropped his estimates for RIM's BlackBerry PlayBook on Wednesday based on investigations of its performance in shops. He dropped his target for 2011 sales from 2.2 million down to 1.5 million based on checks with retailers. They were still facing "soft" sales, and price drops like Best Buy's Labor Day weekend sale were a plan to "move inventory," he said.

AT&T has had one of its more important weekends ahead of the iPhone 5 with the arrivals in store for the HTC Jetstream and LG Thrill 4G. The Jetstream is not just the carrier's first LTE-based 4G tablet but also its first 10-inch tablet outside of the iPad. It mates Android 3.2 with HTC's first version of its Sense interface for the tablet-native Google OS.

HTC Jetstream becomes first LTE tablet at ATT

AT&T began carrying its first 10-inch tablet outside of the iPad on Wednesday with the formal launch of the HTC Jetstream. Previously known as the Puccini, the 10-inch Android 3.1 tablet is the carrier's first non-modem to support LTE for its 4G, with a fallback to a still-fast HSPA+ 3G if necessary. The slate is much faster than the seven-inch Flyer through a dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon fast enough to both record and play 1080p video.

HTC's first full-size entry into tablets, the Jetstream or Puccini, has at last been sighted live for the first time. Its 10-inch tablet is now known for certain to have the dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon processor and the AT&T-ready LTE to preempt any 4G iPad plans. Android 3 ships mostly stock, although there's some light customization in Engadet's view that includes HTC Hub for content like news and weather as well as Notes, presumably for Scribe pen input.

Puccini tablet coming to AT&T as the Jetstream

The future HTC Puccini tablet will be called the Jetstream when it arrives at AT&T at an undisclosed date, PocketNow learned. The outfit also managed to get two screenshots of the device that confirm it will have a 4G connection that's likely LTE and not the HSPA+ 3G AT&T has been marketing as 4G.
