EMI continues suit, pursues CEO and company

In the latest maneuver during a legal battle with EMI that began in 2007, MP3Tunes has filed for bankruptcy. The move puts the ongoing case on hold, and could prevent a judgement in the matter. EMI isn't abandoning the suit, and as the CEO of MP3Tunes is a co-defendant in the case, he is personally facing liability for the alleged infringements.

Ruling could leave door open for locker services

MP3tunes has lost a copyright infringement lawsuit originally filed by EMI, however the judge tossed many of the record label's DMCA claims that were viewed as a threat to other music locker services. Judge William Pauley agreed that MP3tunes violated EMI copyrights by failing to remove pirated tracks from its customers' music lockers after pulling the same listings from Sideload.com, a music search engine that operated alongside the locker service.

Roku comes to Best Buy through XD model

Roku made one of its biggest pushes into retail on Wednesday and landed a key deal with Best Buy. The big-box stores will carry the mid-range Roku XD both in retail and online. The move represents the first time one of the company's networked media hubs is available at stores across the US without a forced rebranding.

Grace Digital hoped to get in updates on its radios before a wave of CES news with the launch of three new Internet radios. The Bravado X, Mondo and Solo Touch now have color, higher resolution displays that provide a much clearer and more image-driven interface. All three can be controlled either from buttons or from the company's iPhone remote control app (free, App Store).

MP3tunes says case win may help Apple and Google

MP3tunes founder Michael Robertson in an interview on Tuesday suggested that a successful defense against an EMI lawsuit would be a help to the rumored iTunes media locker and a future Google music service. If a motion for a summary judgment (found below) dismissing EMI's remaining lawsuit arguments is successful, the case would legally enshrine the right of Apple, Google and MP3tunes itself to host a user's music collection online, Robertson said. A loss, he told CNET, would potentially give EMI and other labels permission to charge for music every time it's copied or transcoded, even if legally obtained and unprotected.

Roku to share iTunes music thanks to MP3tunes

Roku has added the ability to play iTunes music through its home multimedia box through a tie-up with MP3tunes. Users can pass both audio and playlists, and donít need to set up a home media server of any kind. Those with an MP3tunes locker can upload between 10GB and 200GB of their iTunes library and access it from the Roku box even outside of a local network.

EMI case aganst MP3tunes owner dismissed

EMI case dismissed

MP3Tunes announced on Thursday that the Recording Industry Association of Americaís copyright infringement lawsuit against its CEO, Michael Robertson, was dismissed by New York District Judge William H. Pauley III. The lawsuit against MP3Tunes will proceed as planned, however. The lawsuit, headed up by EMI Music and 14 other music RIAA-supporting labels alleges that MP3Tunes infringed on copyrights as it offers an online music storage service, allowing users to upload their music collections and access them from virtually anywhere.
