Closes vulnerabilities in Apache, PHP, more
Today's release of Mac OS X 10.7.3 also incorporates Apple's first Security Update of 2012, addressing vulnerabilities in components throughout the OS and its components. The update is also available as a separate download for Snow Leopard users, and while none of the issues have been reported in the wild, the update is recommended for all users of Mac OS X 10.6 and 10.7, and closes potential issues in programs ranging from Apache to QuickTime.

Filings done in Jamaica, Trinidad, China
Chinese trademark applications filed shortly after the "Back to the Mac" special event last week and just revealed yesterday have disclosed that the company had previously moved to trademark the names "Lion" and "Mission Control" in Jamaica two weeks earlier, Patently Apple reports. It wasn't until the day of the event that a third application, for "LaunchPad" was filed in Trinidad and Tobago.

Software a one-man project, says source
The official Remote app for the iPhone has gone months without an update because of Apple's corporate culture, claims Posterous CEO Sachin Agarwal. The software was last updated in November 2009, in order to provide compatibility with iTunes 9 and the Apple TV 3 firmware. It has yet to gain an iPad-native interface, or upgrades to take advantage of iOS 4.

Suggests major overhaul
Apple is working on a "revolutionary" feature for Mac OS X, a new job listing claims. The company is hiring a software engineer for its Santa Clara Valley offices, who must be experienced with Mac, Objective-C and Unix development. "We are looking for a senior software engineer to help us create a revolutionary new feature in the very foundations of Mac OS X," the listing mentions. "We have something truly revolutionary and really exciting in progress and it is going to require your most creative and focused efforts ever."

OS X 10.7 hinted at in WWDC releases
Some of the first hints of Mac OS X 10.7 have surfaced in material coming out of WWDC. A component of the iOS 4 gold master, AV Foundation, is ultimately part of the next desktop OS. Some of the sessions at the primarily iOS-oriented event also referenced future developments for 10.7, even if their final goals weren't evident.

New carriers, Mac OS X 10.7 thought unlikely
There is "little room for surprise" at this year's WWDC keynote, scheduled for June 7th, claims Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. As is commonly expected, the major focus should be on a new iPhone, featuring better battery life, an upgraded main camera with a flash, and a new front-facing camera for video chat. Beyond this, nothing earthshaking will be announced, Munster predicts.

Claims iPhone focus is part of 'normal cycle'
People shouldn't panic at the absence of Mac categories at this year's 2010 Apple Design Awards, says Steve Jobs. In an e-mail, the CEO explains that Apple is "focusing primarily (though not exclusively) on iPhone OS" for WWDC 2010. "Maybe next year we will focus primarily on the Mac. Just the normal cycle of things. No hidden meaning here," the message concludes.

Google Android may be in crosshairs
Work on Mac OS X 10.7 has been delayed, says Daring Fireball's John Gruber. The tech writer notes that some months ago, he received word that Apple had "tentative plans" to ship a developer beta of the OS at this year's WWDC, likely to be scheduled for early June. Coding of v10.7 is indeed still in progress, claims Gruber, but now with a smaller team and an "unknown" timetable.

iPad may get full-power Mac counterpart
Although the iPad has yet to ship, a potentially significant rumor Monday night has Apple already developing a more advanced model. Supposedly corroborated between sources, the new model would be much larger and more likely run software much more like Mac OS X, not iPhone OS. If true, the system would be ready within a year.

Pre-release OS X 10.7 circulating widely
Apple's as yet unreleased Mac OS X 10.7 has suddenly been picking up in web traffic in recent days and suggests rapidly advancing testing. After only a relatively small level of traffic late in 2009, numerous web logs in recent days have shown many more systems browsing to sites and identifying themselves as 10.7 in their user agent strings. Most of these continue to come from the 17.x.x.x IP address block associated with Apple's offices, but they are now also coming from outside the company or in other countries.
