Patches deal with network boots, HDCP issues
Apple has released four separate EFI firmware updates for Macs. These include Mac mini EFI Firmware Update 1.6, iMac EFI Firmware Update 1.9, MacBook Air EFI Firmware Update 2.4, and MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 2.7. In all cases, the downloads deal with the same core problems.

Intel Ivy Bridge delay to June seen as partial
Intel's claimed delay of Ivy Bridge processors may have been limited and contextualized in a rumor on Sunday. The company still planned to ship desktop and quad-core mobile processors on time, VR-Zone heard, and was mostly keeping the June delays to dual-core mobile processors. Supporting the earlier rumor, the new tips cast it as a move to clear unsold stock of current-generation Sandy Bridge processors, both for raw chips and for unsold (primarily Windows-based) PCs.

Enables Lion Recovery from an internet connection
Apple this afternoon issued three EFI updates for mid-2010 era MacBooks, MacBook Pros and Mac minis, the sole purpose of which was to enable Lion Recovery from an internet connection. The change allows users who have lost the ability to boot from their hard drive or installed a blank new hard drive and don't have a physical backup to restore Lion by re-downloading it from the Mac App Store.

Offers protection and style with full port access
Newer Technology has reworked its previous NuCube stand and enclosure for the older-style Mac minis and made a new, thinner casing called the NuCube Vertical that houses the current model (2010/2011) Mac minis in an acrylic design that is reminiscent of the Mac mini's aesthetic ancestor, the G4 Cube. The enclosure is handcrafted to allow users to orient the Mini vertically, keeping all ports fully accessible while allowing it to run cooler than it does in the horizontal position.

Updates mostly debut or enhance Thunderbolt
Late in the day, Apple Support released a group of EFI firmware updates to recent Mac models, including the current iMac, Mac mini and MacBook Air models, along with one for the just-discontinued "early 2011" MacBook Pros and one for Lion 10.7.2 specifically. With all four EFI updates, the firmware is being modified to either support or enhance existing Apple Thunderbolt Display compatibility and Thunderbolt Target Disk Mode. In addition, the company released QuickTime 7.7.1 for Windows.

LaCie finally delivered its long-promised first Thunderbolt device in the Little Big Disk. The drive is hand-portable but has enough headroom in the 10Gbps connection to supply a Mac with speed well beyond what FireWire can do. Intel Cactus Ridge for Thunderbolt outlined at IDF
Intel in one of the side notes from its Developer Forum presentations has outlined the Thunderbolt controllers that will drive computers based on Ivy Bridge processors. Cactus Ridge will mostly be a refresh of the Light Ridge and Eagle Ridge chips used in current Macs. As such, the high-end Cactus Ridge chip will have four channels that each have a symmetric 10Gbps and two DisplayPort links, while the budget version will have just two of those channels and one DisplayPort link.

Resolves Thunderbolt display, Disk Mode issues
Apple today issued updates for the Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) on Thunderbolt-equipped models of the MacBook Pro and Mac mini that is said to resolve issues with Apple's Thunderbolt Display compatibility and Target Disk Mode under Thunderbolt. The updates also add Lion Recovery mode to MBP and Mini models that shipped with Lion pre-installed, which previously made re-installation of Lion unnecessarily difficult.

While the market for Thunderbolt peripherals is far from mature, the versatile new connector found on iMacs, Mac minis, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models can be easily adapted to host a number of existing peripherals, expanding its usefulness. Sonnet Technologies has announced its Echo ExpressCard/34 Thunderbolt Adapter, enabling the use of ExpressCard peripherals and devices with Thunderbolt-equipped Macs. The adapter even enables other adapters via ExpressCard.

Can bump 2010-2011 iMacs up to 32GB total
2011 model MacBook Pro and Mac minis can now be outfitted with up to 16GB of RAM -- doubling the maximum factory option -- with the introduction of DDR3 1333MHz 8GB modules now available from Other World Computing. The modules will also work with the latest model iMacs, doubling their RAM capacity to 32GB. The company offers an 8GB kit (two 4GB modules) for $72 -- a price that is up to 70 percent less than Apple's factory-installed options.

Special Mini, Air updates solve added issues
Apple has released Mac OS X 10.7.1, its first major update for Lion. The patch solves a collection of bugs, including reported trouble with Wi-Fi connections. Also fixed are data migration barriers, audio cutting out when using HDMI or optical audio output, and an error which caused computers to become unresponsive when playing video in Safari.

iFixit Mac mini Dual Hard Drive Kit
iFixit took the results of its Mac mini teardown to heart on Friday and put out an upgrade kit for buyers. Its Mac mini Dual Hard Drive Kit lets those who bought the 2011 Mac mini add in a second drive if they didn't either build-to-order the solid-state drive or opt for the server version. The kit includes a needed special SATA cable as well as the mounting equipment, a 26-piece bit driver, a spudger, and iFixit's own mainboard removal tool.
