Skitch iOS update restores PDF reading, markup support, web capture

The iOS version of screen capture and markup app Skitch (free) has been updated, mostly restoring features that were previously removed. Users can now once again open and read PDFs in the program, as well as markup and re-save a PDF (the latter feature requires an Evernote Premium account, however). Crop mode has been removed and various bugs fixed, and web capture has been added back in. Evernote, which bought Skitch two years ago, has dealt with continuing criticism over the company's changes to the program, which was originally created to quickly capture, annotate and share screenshots. Evernote Premium accounts cost $5 per month or $45 per year.

MacFamilyTree 7.1 released offering new web export

Synium's MacFamilyTree 7 software has received a major update, released today. Version 7.1 of the family tree creation software is optimized for OS X Mavericks, and features improved performance as well as support for Mavericks' AppNap. MacFamilyTree has also gained the ability to export websites directly from the program, which can be shared with whomever the user chooses. Chart backdrops have also been included, allowing users to add a family crest or any other image desired for their family tree chart. Based on the new Apple Maps component of OS X Mavericks, MacFamilyTree 7.1 features statistical maps that display ancestors' demographics and life data on a map visualization. Other noteworthy new inclusions are improved privacy settings, search workflow, UI and more.

In tandem with the announcement of 3ds Max 2012, Autodesk has additionally revealed Maya 2012. The modeling, effects and animation suite is getting several improvements, such as a new viewport with fullscreen rendering options like motion blur and depth-of-field. The viewport has also gained a new API, batch rendering functions and component and manipulator displays.

OnLive expands to apps, shows Maya 'running' on an iPad

OnLive gets into streaming apps

OnLive at the D: Dive Into Mobile show today expanded its scope beyond just gaming with plans to stream regular apps and websites to other devices. The company targeted it at mobile users and showed apps and features running through the OnLive Viewer iPad client (free, App Store) that wouldn't have been possible otherwise. Users could run an instance of Internet Explorer with Flash on Apple's tablet, or even a high-end professional rendering app like Autodesk's Maya, chief executive Steve Perlman proved on stage.

Autodesk on Tuesday announced Maya 2011, along with updates to its Mudbox and FDX utilities for Mac OS X. The latest version of Maya features a redesigned user-interface based on Nokia Qt, with simpler customization and dockable elements. The graphics core has been revamped to improve performance with complex scenes, while also enhancing the viewport feedback.

Autodesk has announced 2010 updates for two of its key graphics suites, Maya and Mudbox. Maya handles a variety of animation, rendering and effects tasks, and in its 2010 edition will gain Composite, a new module replacing technology from the company's now-defunct Toxik software. Also planned is Backburner, a queue manager for network rendering, and MatchMover, a 3D tracking and matchmoving component.

Developer Luxology has announced a upcoming COLLADA plug-in for its imminent 3D rendering suite, modo 401. COLLADA is an XML scheme, used to ensure that art output created with one program can be edited by another, where normally filetypes would be incompatible. The plug-in will support layered transform stacks, and text profiles of modo items, channels and animation envelopes.

Rhino CAD needs Leopard

A new Wenatchee build of Rhino has upped the system requirements to Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, and introduced several new features, while the new Electric Image Sonica 1.0 plug-in provides audio-visual synchronization for Maya users. Architosh reports that Rhino can now accommodate European ISO keyboards for some menu shortcuts, as well as two new mouse gestures, four trackpad gestures, and many new commands for tool palettes.

Craft Animations has released its Craft Director Tools animation plug-in suite for users of Autodesk Maya on the Mac platform. Three primary sets of plug-ins are offered, including Craft Camera Tools, Craft Vehicles, and Craft Accessories. A variety of camera functions are available, including controls for automatic zoom, camera movements, simulated human interaction, and real time camera perspective and angle adjustments. Other tools include a stabilizer for cameras attached to animated objects, spherical path utility, spline speed controller, and a zero gravity environment replicator.

Following its announcement of Maya 2009, Autodesk has revealed two more apps in development for October, Stitcher Unlimited and ImageModeler. Each is based on software formerly developed by REALVIZ; the former lets users generate panoramas and wide-angle shots by merging photos, and has been upgraded with a "fully" automatic engine, as well as high dynamic range (HDR) compositing, support for Photoshop, and croppable rendering areas.

Autodesk has announced Maya 2009, the next version of its 3D modeling, animation and effects suite. Features in the new version are expected to include a "Maya Assets" toolset, which will let people bundle a particulate set of nodes into a single container, and view that data in a means suited to an artist's assignment. Users will also have access to a new "Render Proxy" feature in mental ray, and should see faster performance thanks to improvements in algorithms and multi-threading.

Demicron recently announced support for the Mac platform by unveiling WireFusion 5 for Mac, its architectural and industrial design software for small and medium sized design firms. According to Architosh,WireFusion allows designers to create realtime 3D visualizations using content imported from Maya, Lightwave 3D or any other application that can export to VRML or X3D file formats. WireFusion 5 is available for $1500 for a standard professional license.

Sonica plug-in syncs Maya to sound

Sonica plug-in for Maya

EI Technology has released the public beta version of Sonica, a plug-in for the Maya rendering suite. The software is used to synchronize animation in Maya to sound; it does this by extracting spectrum and waveform animation from a track, and generating dependency nodes that can be connected to others for different effects. Multi-tracking is supported, and pre-made scripts are included for common representations of sound such as vertical bars.
