Sony, Panasonic, Samsung among supporters
Rental outfit Netflix has announced a development effort that will see a Netflix One-Click button placed on remotes for Internet-enabled TVs and Blu-ray players. The button will offer direct access to the company's streaming service, bypassing other menu screens. Initial remotes with the button are expected in the spring.
Memorex intros MyVideo, MyVideo HD cams
Not normally known for capturing video itself, Memorex today upgraded its pocketable video cameras with two sleeker models. The 720p-capable MyVideo HD and standard definition MyVideo VGA emulate the same basic concept as Flip cameras but have the advantages of 2X digital zoom and longer battery life. The MyVideo HD's more demanding video gives it a still long 2.5 hours of recording time, while the VGA model can capture for up to five hours.
Memorex at CES launched several new audio products including three iPod docks and a touchscreen MP3 player. The Mi9490P offers a 30-watt speaker system, slot-load CD player and an FM radio, with an integrated dock for the iPod or iPhone. The all-black housing is designed with slightly rounded edges and a white-on-black LCD. The Mi4290P provides clock-radio functions in addition to the dock capabilities. Users can control the system with a remote or set the alarm to play an iPod track.
Memorex intros earbuds
On Monday, Memorex announced it will soon launch three new in-ear headphones, including the EB100, EB200 and EB300. All three feature patented Soundelity conforming foam earbuds designed by hearing protection specialist Howard Leight for superior comfort and sound delivery. The company claims its new earbuds are unique in offering the foam tips, which are usually found in headphones that cost as much as 10 times more. The foam tips ensure greater comfort and improve sound quality by conforming to users' ear canals to isolate them from ambient noise while enhancing bass.
Memorex Blu-ray Player
Memorex set a new record today by becoming the first major electronics maker to launch a Blu-ray player below $300 at an ordinary price. The MVBD-2510's $270 price tag puts it well below the $400 average asking price for players from Sony and others but still gives it features that are common to the more expensive players, including Profile 1.1 support for picture-in-picture commentary and HDMI output that supports 7.1-channel surround through Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD and raw bitstream audio. It also plays 24p video natively without pulldown conversion.
Memorex Ultra TravelDrive
Memorex on Thursday announced it would add a 500GB version of its portable hard disk drive to its Ultra TravelDrive range, replacing the 320GB drive as the largest capacity offering. At the same time, the company dropped the 80GB and 120GB capacity versions of the drives. The 2.5-inch drive requires only a USB 2.0 connection to both transfer files and power up.
Memorex iPod Clock Radios
Memorex hopes to push down the cost of iPod-aware clock radios today with two relative budget models. The iWakeUp is the range leader with a relatively streamlined look and the most advanced features, including dual alarms for weekdays versus weekends and a sound enhancer for its more powerful speakers. Like many iPod-ready radios, it can also set the alarms to trigger either the iPod itself, an AM or FM radio station, or a buzzer. The device is compatible with most all dockable iPods up to the iPod touch, though the company shows an iPhone in the dock and hints at possible support for at least Airplane Mode. The iWakeUp sells today for $70 in black and white versions.
Memorex Essential Drives
Memorex today took advantage of the back-to-school timeframe to introduce a third lineup to its hard drive range. The Essential TravelDrive relies on color as its selling point with subtler variants of blue, green, and purple joining a more conventional silver to match the owner's notebook or desk. Like most portable drives, the 2.5-inch Essentials are energy-friendly enough to be powered entirely from the USB connection used for data.
Memorex MP3 Players
Memorex on Monday launched a visual redesign of its MMP media player line that introduces a much simpler interface as well as a new form factor. The Clip & Play (pictured) aims at the same audience as the iPod shuffle or Sansa Clip and comes in a very small, squarish design that can be hooked to a shirt edge or belt during exercise. Despite the size, Memorex finds room for a two-line OLED screen that itself allows extra features such as an equalizer and an FM radio tuner. The jukebox plays MP3 and WMA for up to 10 hours on a charge and sells for $50 with 2GB of built-in flash.
Memorex Digital Frames
Memorex announced the release of two new digital photo frames on Wednesday. The Special Occasions frame comes with four distinct surround inserts meant to highlight the key stages in one's life: white for wedding(s), baby blue for the birth of a son, or light pink for the birth of a daughter. The metallic silver surround is for all-around use. The other new product is the Floral frame, and it features a blue silkscreen floral design sitting atop a brown frame.
