RIM next-gen smartphones leak ahead of launch

The RIM BlackBerry 9850 and 9860 have been confirmed again ahead of their launch in a website slip. This time a site selling a Bluetooth headset accessory has also confirmed that the BlackBerry 9850 and 9860 (formerly codenamed “Monaco”) will be called the BlackBerry Torch. An additional slip, this time by Verizon, shows a Verizon staffer giving users a walkthrough of the forthcoming BlackBerry Bold 9930.

More photos of the BlackBerry 9860 running Blackberry 7 have surfaced. The latest shots of the device have shown up on the Greek blog GreekBerry. There have been several names associated with the 9860, including Monza, Monaco, and Volt.

RIM is allegedly preparing to name its upcoming touchscreen handset as the BlackBerry Volt, according to a rumor posted on N4BB. The branding would is said to be tied to the Monaco 9850 and Monza 9860 variants, which represent the same external design based on a 3.7-inch touchscreen, but differ in their respective ties to CDMA and GSM networks.

The latest leak, which was posted by BBNews.pl, shows the device in the wild, providing a preview of the touch-based interface and corroborating the overall design that was presented in earlier renderings.

BlackBerry Storm3 shown for real in video

RIM's long in the making BlackBerry Storm3 has appeared in the flesh on Friday through a video (below). Along with confirming its combination of a keyboard-free design with a trackpad, the slip shows the extra screen area afforded by the 3.7-inch, 480x800 display. It clearly represents a Verizon prototype and has both the Verizon logo and on-phone theming along with a "live air activation" market indicating that it was ready to work on the CDMA and EVDO networks, hinted by a 3G badge in the upper right of the display.

Verizon roadmap shows Incredible 2 and Monaco

A purportedly escaped roadmap for Verizon has given out possible timetables for some of its most important phones, including ones it hasn't yet announced. The rumored Droid Incredible sequel might ship in the first quarter of March despite remaining an official secret. The buttonless touchscreen device is rumored by Phone Arena to be a world phone with both CDMA and GSM.

Mediaroom IPTV may bring Silverlight and WMC hooks

Microsoft's Mediaroom IPTV backbone might get a major boost soon if leaks prove accurate. One project, codenamed Taos, would give it direct support for the Silverlight plugin and play web-based TV on DVRs without needing special support. While few details were available, ZDNet reiterated that it might be part of a wider strategy for web video in the living room, since Microsoft is already porting Silverlight to the Xbox 360 and has been working on support for system-on-a-chip hardware needed for set-top boxes.

BlackBerry with LTE rumored still in early state

RIM might not have a 4G-capable BlackBerry for some time, a rumor alleged on Monday. The project is still considered early and not yet cost effective enough to be worth a release in the near future. Among the concerns Fudzilla has reportedly heard are that LTE chipsets are currently too power hungry, that they're too expensive, and that coverage isn't wide enough.
