Nest adds support for major home automation systems to devices

Control4, Creston, RTI, URC work with Nest Protect, Thermostat

Nest Labs has confirmed its range of devices are compatible with a number of major home automation systems. Revealed at CEDIA, the company advised its Learning Thermostat and Protect will work with Control4, Crestron, Remote Technologies Incorporated (RTI), and Universal Remote Control (URC) systems, with Dropcam also joining the list of companies in the Works with Nest program.

Nest halts sales of smoke alarm to fine-tune disabling Wave feature

Alarm could be accidentally disabled by motion, now disabled in existing units

Ahead of any reported problems among existing users, Nest is voluntarily halting sales of its Nest Protect smoke and carbon monoxide alarm due to potential issues with one of the features. In addition, the company will be remotely disabling the Nest Wave feature in existing units, which allowed users to turn off alarms by simply waving their hands at the unit. Internal company testing had shown that the feature could in some circumstances disable the alarms unintentionally, which might delay an alarm in the event of a real fire.

Makeover includes 'Quiet Time' setting, room naming, Protect compatibility

Nest, a company that makes smart home management electronics and is run by former iPod project manager Tony Fadell, has updated the Nest Learning Thermostat and the iPhone app that can be used to manage it, giving the program a makeover that will match a firmware update rolling out over the next few days. The update revamps many aspects of the current program, adds new features and brings in support for the company's other product, the Nest Protect smoke detector.

Detector talks before sounding 85dB alarm

Nest has introduced a smoke and carbon-monoxide detector that aims to overcome many of the annoyances and drawbacks of traditional detectors. Rather than simply sounding a loud alarm at the first hint of smoke, the Protect starts by using a human voice and changing light colors to tell residents what's wrong and where the problem.
