Nokia Maps mobile web app gets voice navigation

Nokia has enhanced the functionality of its mobile Nokia Maps web interface for iOS and Android platforms with new voice-guided navigation instructions. There is no need to download an app for either, as it's accessed from the mobile browser. To get the voice directions, users will need to accept an audio file that is about 2MB in size.

Nokia enhances Maps 3D with search, share, more

Nokia has now enhanced its web-based Nokia Maps 3D with the ability to search for attractions, restaurants and shops and get navigation guidance in 3D. Introduced back in April, the photorealistic 3D views are only available in the 25 major cities supported by the software. The search field will let users quickly find addresses, businesses and points of interest.

The highly regarded Nokia Maps service has been given an app placeholder in the Windows Phone Marketplace. The app is expected to be an exclusive for Nokia’s forthcoming Windows Phone 7 mobiles, and is an example of the way in which Nokia will have certain privileges in its deal with Microsoft that will help differentiate its devices from competitors. Nokia Windows Phone could use special maps

A pre-release T-Mobile Germany promo banner for Nokia's Windows Phone hardware uncovered Friday could point to Nokia having a special turn-by-turn GPS app. Called Nokia Drive, it would be an adaptation of Nokia Maps with 3D buildings and voice-command navigation, WinRumors saw. Windows Phone 7.5 has better GPS mapping than before, but 3D and direct voice navigation aren't part of Microsoft's official feature set.

Nokia Maps now works on web for iOS, Android

Nokia made a rare concession to challenging phone platforms Friday with a new mobile-aware version of Nokia Maps. An updated HTML5-based page gives Android and iOS users both a way to find their location as well as plot directions by car or on foot. It will find points of interest that include public transit routes, though it drops short of Google Maps without the option of routing based on those lines.

Nokia and Microsoft strike Windows Phone deal

Nokia during its financial meeting today confirmed a historic deal with Microsoft to switch primarily to Windows Phone in return for key deals. The phone maker will use Windows Phone as its "principal" smartphone strategy for the future, including the use of mobile Office and Xbox Live. Bing will be primary search engine across all of Nokia's platforms, and Microsoft's adCenter will provide mobile ads.
