ATT admits iPad data plans better for many

AT&T's Emerging Devices product development VP David Haight today said at the 4G World expo today that the company might back away from its traditionally high data-only plans and more towards those like for the iPad. While the iPad was successful, most other devices weren't selling that well because of the traditional US carrier model of $60 per month and an emphasis on contract-bound, locked devices. Apple's special plans were better, he told PCMag, since they were not only much less expensive at $25 but didn't force users to pay for service they didn't need.

Intel Moorestown finally launches as Atom Z600

Intel today at last launched its first Atom processor designed for smartphones and tablets. Once known as Moorestown, the Z600 and its companion MP20 hub are much more power efficient than regular Atom chips, especially in low-demand situations. It gets a strictly average 4-5 hours of battery life for cellular browsing or video viewing but over 10 days of standby and about 2 days of audio.

OpenTablet 7 uses Flash UI, Moorestown Atom

OpenPeak on Tuesday gave companies a white box alternative to the iPad. The OpenTablet 7 is seen both as a media consumption device and as a home control device: through a combination of 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and HDMI output, the 7-inch tablet can grab both music and videos from the local network as well as steer home theaters and home automation systems. It also carries 3G for those companies who want online-anywhere access.

OpenPeak takes iPhone ethos to landlines

OpenPeak Home Phones

Newcomer American firm OpenPeak is developing a home phone system that would take many of the design principles of the iPhone to fixed lines, according to a scoop at Wired. The OpenFrame would revolve around a large, portrait-style touchscreen display with some phone functionality built-in but which will also have support for extra functions both out of the box and through third-party apps.
