Apple Stores suffer retail POS, Personal Pickup outage

Apparently nationwide, reports vary on length, systems now restored

Apple retail stores around the US suffered an unusual outage of the company's point-of-sale (POS) systems that lasted for up to two hours at some locations earlier today, affecting the ability to make purchases and pick up items ordered online for in-store delivery. Quick checks of stores in Albequerque New Mexico, New York City and northern Virginia along with other reports indicate that outage times varied, with the disruption described as "no big deal" at some stores while others had longer downtimes.

iPad point of sale replaces legacy system, enhances retail interactions

AT&T has revealed details of its new flagship retail store in the "Magnificent Mile" district of Chicago. The new store commands 10,000 square feet of floorspace, and acts as a technology demonstrator for AT&T. The store is the first of it's kind utilizing AT&T's previously announced initiative in selling at the point-of-sale (POS) with Apple's iPad and custom software.

Xsilva re-brands as LightSpeed, updates POS software

Xsilva Systems, the company that develops the LightSpeed POS system, has announced a major new update to version 3.5 for their flagship product, changing the name of the company itself to LightSpeed to capitalize on its worldwide reseller network. The new version brings an open API to foster additional development, along with a new eCommerce package to support its own web-store option as well as the Magento platform.

ShopKeep releases iPad POS for retail

Cloud-based software works with Macs, PCs also

ShopKeep.com, a cloud-based POS developer that offers Windows and Mac based cash-register hardware and software, is launching a beta of a iPad-based POS system to compete directly with existing bulkier, more expensive touch-screen systems aimed at small retail businesses (such as bakeries, coffee shops or other outlets where there are fewer than 150 items for sale). The pilot program will debut at popular Grand Central Station coffee shop Joe in New York City on January 18th.

Xsilva (Booth No. 314) this week will offer previews and demos of LightSpeed 3.0, its revamped retail point-of-sale (POS) application. Expected to ship in the spring of 2009, LightSpeed combines a POS functions for front-counter retail with back-office functions such as inventory management, order processing and billing. LightSpeed 2.7 update

Xsilva Systems on Wednesday unveiled LightSpeed 2.7, a major update to its point-of-sale system for the Mac, which adds compatibility with QuickBooks Accounting 2009 for Mac, among other features. Users are able to now send POS data from LightSpeed to QuickBooks to simplify the accounting process. LightSpeed also ensures that duplicate entries do not populate in QuickBooks, with full history and archiving. LightSpeed 2.7 is available starting at $1100 with a tech support package.

Checkout 2.0 updates point-of-sale solution

Checkout 2.0 released

Werck BV on Thursday released Checkout 2.0, its point-of-sale solution for small- and medium-sized Mac-based stores. Werck, a joint venture between development studio Sofa and small business-focused MYOB US, lets retailers process credit cards real-time and create and manage purchase orders. It also supports multi-user access to the solution over a network and can integrate Checkout data with MYOB AccountEdge or Intuit's QuickBooks Pro for Mac. Checkout 2.0 runs on Mac OS X 10.4.10 or later and is priced at $400; it is a free upgrade for existing users. In the United States and Canada, Checkout 2.0 is sold as MYOB Checkout and will be sold by MYOB US.

MWSF: Xsilva's Lightspeed point-of-sale system

Montreal-based Xsilva Systems demonstrated LightSpeed 2.5 at Macworld Expo this past week, showing users how the software works with touchscreen computers. CEO Dax Dasilva guided MacNN through the workings of LightSpeed, pointing out the iPhone-like functionality of Cover Flow integration. Users can browse through products or customers using Cover Flow, giving retailers a visual overview of their database. Licensing for LightSpeed 2 starts at $750, and is available through Xsilva's online store.

LightSpeed 2.5: iPhone, multi-store transfer

Xsilva Systems recently unveiled LightSpeed 2.5, an update to its Mac OS-based point of sale system, introducing features such as Leopard compatibility, iPhone integration, and CoverFlow. Retailers are able to track sales, payments, returns, and invoice counts over various periods of time using the iPhone App, LightSpeed Stats. Stats can also show information regarding which employees are currently clocked in for work and how much time they've spent on Jobs and Tasks, and the app links employee contact information to the iPhone so that emails and phone calls to staff require only one tap. LightSpeed 2.5 is available from select retailers, as well as the Xsilva online store, starting from $750.
