Third-ranking South Korean phone company forced to sell after bankruptcy woes

Things have gone from bad to worse for South Korean smartphone manufacturer Pantech. After filing for a debt restructuring in February, it asked was forced to ask for a deadline extension in July to pay off its creditors. It turns out that the interest-free, two-year extension granted in August wasn't long enough, as the company is now searching for buyer after filing for court receivership.

Local companies continue to hold greatest share

Together the iPhone and the iPad currently represent about 14 percent of South Korean mobile devices, according to new tracking data from Flurry. In all, there are about 33 million smartphones and tablets in use in the country. Most of these are made by local firms; Samsung has a 60 percent share, while LG is in second at 15 percent. Pantech -- a marginal device maker in the US -- controls a 10 percent share in its home country. The remaining 1 percent in Korea is split between all other Android device makers.

South Korean electronic companies LG and Samsung are rumored to release smartphones with 1080p displays in the first half of 2013, daily paper MK News reported. LG is said to use LCDs for its screen, while Samsung will reportedly go with AMOLED technology. Such displays will have a minimum pixel density of 440ppi, compared to the current Apple iPhone's 326ppi screen.

Both will be available online on November 24, 25, and 28, and in-store on November 25 only. The phone will be free with a new two-year contract, but only after a $50 mail-in rebate. The Xoom LTE will require a two-year contract with at least a $30 monthly plan for 2GB of data.
