Moves to startup to fill gap from Picnik closure
Flickr has announced that Aviary will be its new photo editing web app. The division of Yahoo had been using Google's Picnik, but had to scramble to find a replacement after Google announced plans in January to shut Picnik down on April 19 as part of a streamlining of operations that Google began last August.

Google trims again with Picnik shutdown
Google in an update gave notice that it was pruning more of its services, this time more directly affecting mobile and creative use. The company now planned to scrap its cloud photo editing service Picnik as of April 19. It had bought out Picnik in 2010 and wanted to keep the team's focus on the image editing it had already added to Google+ and other services.

Google buys Picnik for Picasa image editing
Google this afternoon said it has bought Picnik, a web-based image editing site. Neither company has unveiled the terms of the deal or their immediate plans, though Google has said the deal will help it "improve the online photo editing experience." Picnik as a service is expected to remain as-is for the near future.
