Sales of PS2 gear to continue for 'several months'

Years after it discontinued sales of similarly-aged Nintendo Gamecube and original Microsoft Xbox hardware and games, retailer Gamestop has announced that June 1 marks the end of trade-ins of PlayStation 2 games, accessories, and the console itself. Used and new game sales will continue in all locations, inventory depending, with existing stock expected to last for "several months" after the June 1 cutoff.

Sony is putting a stop to sales of the long-standing and popular PlayStation 2 game console in Japan. The electronics giant made an announcement earlier today that there will be no more shipments to Japanese retailers, in the future, and that the only remaining stock on the market are consoles held on store shelves or warehouses.

Handheld PS2 console built by modder, up for sale

A Modretro forum member and skilled modder, techknott, has just posted a home-built PlayStation 2 console up for sale. The device uses an add-on screen made for the PSone by Sony, along with the original backlight. There are USB connections and a headphone jack, as well as integrated speakers; it lacks built-in batteries, however.

Sony PS2 bundle celebrates 10-year anniversary

In an unconventional move, Sony on Wednesday announced it will soon ship a PlayStation 2 bundle that includes Toy Story 3: The Video Game. Due to ship on October 31, the bundle is meant to mark the aging system's 10-year birthday. In its long life, the best-selling system saw more than 2,000 games created.

Sony PS2 console to drop to $100 on April 1st

PS2 reduced to $100

Sony's director of hardware marketing, John Koller, has officially announced that the PlayStation 2 gaming console will begin selling for $99.99 starting tomorrow, April 1st. This represents a $30 price drop from the current price, roughly 23 percent, and may be the source of rumors of a PS3 price cut. Sony has consistently denied any PS3 reductions.

Sony game sales up 10 percent, loss more than halved

Sony game sales up 10%

Sony on Wednesday announced its second-quarter fiscal results, ending on September 30, revealing an upward trend in the company's video game operations. While the giant company was down overall by 0.5 percent from the same time period in 2007, its gaming division showed a positive trend upwards. Overall sales were up by more than 10 percent and the arm's quarterly loss was halved to $379 million. The disproportionate change can be partly attributed to the decreasing costs involved in making the PlayStation 3 gaming console as production and sales volumes go up.
