Pogoplug is starting up a new cloud backup system using Amazon Web Services for storage. The Family service will use a combination of the Pogoplug device and Amazon Glacier to backup multiple computers and handheld devices to both on-site and off-site storage, with all backups viewable through web browsers.

Pogoplug on Wednesday rolled out the Pogoplug Series 4 as the latest incarnation of its do-it-yourself cloud storage. The new version adds a pair of USB 3.0 ports on top of USB 2.0 to provide much more always-on external storage. They can also take SATA drives through the USM format, the same that Seagate uses in its GoFlex models.

Cloud Engines adapted its strategy for the Pogoplug Wednesday with a new software-based version of its remote storage feature. Its app lets Mac and Windows user share the contents of their systems to nearly anywhere online over the web without needing a Pogoplug drive. A new trick for the category, though, is OneView: the method lets users pool their storage from multiple devices and see it as one, consistent library with no duplicates.

Three months after first mention, Buffalo on Monday shipped the CloudStor. PogoPlug ships products, outs firmware update

Cloud Engines, maker of the PogoPlug NAS adapter, announced on Tuesday that it has posted a promised software update that will let users print from their iPads, iPhones, Android smartphones or other Internet connected devices from anywhere they can get an Internet connection. At the same time, the company said that its PogoPlug Biz and the Wi-Fi Adapter are both shipping. The update should be delivered to all users before week's end.

CloudEngines this morning added a simple Wi-Fi adapter to extend the usefulness of a PogoPlug. The Wireless Adapter slips into a free USB port on the device and gives either the regular model or the PogoPlug Biz 802.11n networking to put its storage online without having to connect over Ethernet. Owners can fine-tune its settings through the same web interface they would use for the networked storage enabler.

The device is designed to make network-attached storage simple and only involves attaching the Pogoplug to a home router and the drive in question to the plug. A web front end lets users then gain access to all the information on the drive regardless of the location. The plug itself is compatible with any USB 2 hard drive or memory stick, while the Pogoplug website can be used with any web browser.
