Stylish but still business oriented
HP recently released the ProBook 5330m, a business-oriented notebook with a stylish appearance that easily could be mistaken for a consumer model. The redesign is not accidental, as the company is attempting to woo customers who desire a business machine without the lackluster aesthetics of typical enterprise buys. In our full review, we take a look at the new ProBook's balance between form and function.
HP dv series and ProBooks get AMD A4, A6, A8
HP on Tuesday embraced AMD's A-series in a big way by updating its Pavilion dv and g models, as well as the ProBook line, with the new chips. The 14-inch dv4, 15.6-inch dv6, and 17.3-inch dv7 as well as their g4, g6, and g7 budget counterparts all use processors ranging from the dual-core A4 up to the quad-core A8. They both get a brute force improvement over the older Athlon, Phenom, and Turion chips as well as twice-as-fast integrated graphics that can still handle 1080p video and some gaming.
HP EliteBook 2560p and 2760p, ProBook 5330m debut
HP's attention to notebooks early Monday saw it launch three pro notebook, each of which claimed a first. The 12.1-inch EliteBook 2760p is its first real EliteBook tablet and brings the swivelling screen to the same US military-grade metal chassis as its predecessors. Performance also meets the label's expectations with 2011 Core i5 and i7 processors as well as an optional HSPA+ 3G modem.
HP ProBook b-series and s-series speed up for 2011
HP on Wednesday respun its ProBook line to take advantage of Intel's second-run Core (Sandy Bridge) processors. The ProBook b-series in 6360b, 6460b and 6560b form makes the leap to newer Core i3, i5 and i7 chips and also have a design built to harden the chassis without the cost of the EliteBooks. All of them have anodized aluminum lids, magnesium-backed main frames and design touches that reduce the damage from water spills and improve the sealing on the notebook when closed.
HP ProBook gets quad AMD processors
HP revamped its business notebooks in large fashion today with a particularly large update to its ProBook line. The 14-inch 6455b and 15.6-inch 6555b are some of the first pro systems to use AMD's new mobile Phenom II processors. They add three- and four-core options up to 2GHz and are reckoned to be about 69 percent faster than HP's earlier AMD-running business notebooks but with 24 percent more battery life.
HP updates EliteBook, ProBook for Core i7
HP began the week by launching a slate of new EliteBook and ProBook models, including the company's first tablet based on Intel's new chip architecture. The EliteBook 2740p carries a 12-inch multi-touch display that also supports pens, but has a more durable body than mainstream PCs like the TouchSmart tm2. A combination of stainless steel outside and magnesium outside helps it meet the US military's 810G specs for resistance to dust, humidity and vibration.
HP EliteBook, ProBook get major speedups
HP with its CES introductions today has focused most on upgrades to its high-end professional notebook. The EliteBook 8440p, 8440w, 8540p and 8540w all use the familiar aluminum/magnesium chassis but get dramatic performance updates: they replace the Core 2 Duo with either mobile Core i7 or new Core i5 processors. All four are home to brand new NVIDIA Quadro FX and NVS graphics cores that should provide faster 3D rendering.
HP Z200, Compaq Elite 8000f and 8100 show
Pro desktops at HP were served today by the launch of a new workstation and a pair of small desktops, including the first ever Windows PC to lack toxins. The fastest in the line is the company's latest Z series workstation, the Z200; a step below the Z400, it will be the company's new entry level workstation and should use Core i3 and Core i5 as well as the Xeon 3400 series quad-core chips. Its performance aims at the mid-range with up to 16GB of RAM, Quadro FX 1800 video and options like a Blu-ray burner or an X-Fi Titanium sound card.
HP Envy 14, 17, others, leaked in Korea
A recently spotted Excel document on HP's website reveals the computer maker will soon release two new Envy-series notebooks, the previously leaked Envy 14 and a larger Envy 17. While the leak only shows the model names, HP's traditional naming convention indicates the former will have a 14-inch screen while the latter will sport a 17-inch display. It's also more than likely that the Envy 17 will have a 1920x1080-pixel display, with the Envy 14 using a 1600x900 panel.
HP ProBook 5310m and Pavilion dm3
As part of a shift to ultra-thin notebooks, HP tonight launched two crossover 13.3-inch notebooks that it hopes are both fast and portable. The ProBook 5310m is unofficially the most portable full-performance notebook ever with an 0.93-inch thick body (versus Apple's 0.94 inches) and a 3.8-pound weight; it accomplishes the feat through an aluminum shell without an optical drive and, unusually, by giving the option of a full-speed 2.26GHz Core 2 Duo as well as a CULV-based 1.2GHz Celeron dual-core. Using the Celeron gives the system as much as 7 hours of battery life using the stock 4-cell battery.
HP tonight put pressure on Apple's high-end MacBook Pros, as well as the current Dell Latitude series, by launching its ProBook s-series portables. The new systems are exercises in minimalism and blur the distinctions between home and work models: though they have quick access to calendars and contacts as well as added security measures and the option of 3G, they all have 16:9 ratio, LED-backlit screens, options for media features like Blu-ray or dedicated non-workstation graphics, and a merlot red body color option. They mark HP's first systems to use through-the-shell "chiclet" keyboards like Apple's MacBooks or certain Sony models.
