Bono says current Apple products still hide RED logo
U2 frontman/(Product) RED creator Bono squared off with former Apple CEO Steve Jobs about RED branding, a Cannes interview (below) reveals. Some proceeds from RED-branded products go toward the Global Fund, a charity that combats AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis, particularly in Africa. Bono notes however that when Apple was first entering the program, Jobs wanted to remove the parentheses to stop anything from "interfering with the logo." After some time to sleep on the idea, Jobs partially conceded, but still blocked parentheses from being used in Apple Stores.
Topic to be (RED) designs
The Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity has announced an interview of U2 frontman Bono and lead Apple designer Jonathan Ive on June 21st. Bono is due to receive the first-ever LionHeart award at the festival for his (RED) charity, and so he and Ive will be interviewed about their collaboration on (RED) products. The interview is due to last 45 minutes; it's not clear if people will be able to watch the interview online later.
Extra $5 million since September
Apple's contributions to Product (RED) have reached $70 million, according to the charity's Twitter account. That implies an increase of $5 million since September 2013. Apple is the biggest individual contributor to (RED), and has been participating in the charity since 2006.
Pair talk (Product) RED designs
Apple's lead designer, Jonathan Ive, is interviewed along with fellow designer Marc Newson on the latest episode of the Charlie Rose Show on PBS. The show aired last night in some parts of the US, but is only scheduled for 11PM Eastern tonight in others. It has also yet to become available on the Charlie Rose website, although Bloomberg has a short clip (below).
Apple reviving attention on (Product) RED
Apple has launched iTunes pre-orders for a new album to benefit the Global Fund, Dance (RED) Save Lives, Vol. 2. The album is due to go live November 25th, and features artists such as Coldplay, Robin Thicke, deadmau5, and Bob Marley. People who pre-order can get early access to "Celebrate," a song by Empire of the Sun and Tommy Trash.
Company takes top spot on RED list
Apple's contributions to the Global Fund against AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis, made via (Product) RED, have amounted to somewhere over $65 million since the company joined the program in 2006, according to Bono, U2 singer and founder of the RED initiative. He made the comments during today's annual meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative. "Apple is certainly leading the crew," he added, indicating that the company is so far generating the most money amongst RED participants.
Auction proceeds to go towards fighting disease
Apple's senior VP of design, Jonathan Ive, has collaborated with U2's Bono and industrial designer Marc Newson on a special set of EarPods for a charity auction. The set is plated in 18-karat solid rose gold, and will offered as part of the (RED) Auction, meant to benefit the Global Fund to fight AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis.
Amazon to sell Vista (RED)
Previously only available preloaded onto Dell notebooks, Microsoft's version of Windows Vista branded under the Product (RED) global charity in support of AIDS research, the software by itself will begin shipping via Amazon starting on December 15th. The operating system on Dell's notebooks included six unique wallpapers, a screensaver, two sidebar gadgets and a Dreamscene, some of which are expected to be included in this standalone version as well, although Microsoft's product page indicates that two new wallpapers are included in the software.
