Sprint to launch DirectConnect Now app next month

Sprint will soon launch an Android app that will bring all the features of its DirectConnect push-to-talk service to handsets without the need for specialized hardware. The information came from a leaked internal Sprint document shared by PhoneNews. Called Sprint DirectConnect Now, the app should also bring the long-awaited Push-to-X feature that never came out the hardware platform.

Qualcomm found in contempt

Despite a recent overturning of a ban on Qualcomm chip sales, the company is once again found in contempt of an injunction of 3G cellular phone chip patents held by wired and wireless semiconductors maker Broadcom. Broadcom announced on Tuesday that a federal judge on Monday found Qualcomm in contempt of an injunction agreed to last November preventing it from shipping products using two Broadcom patents.

Moto Renegade at Sprint

Sprint today bolstered its push-to-talk lineup with the Moto V950 Renegade. The flip-phone is hardened to US military-grade specifications for resistance to dust, water and shocks but is as thin as many of Motorola's thinner cellphones and supports the Nextel push-to-talk network through QChat, which uses the phone's faster EVDO Revision A Internet access for its instant-on calls. The device is also a true media phone with a two-megapixel camera, media player software, and access to Sprint's streaming media add-ons.

Verizon intros Moto Adventure push-to-talk phone

Moto V750 Adventure at VZW

Verizon this morning quietly introduced the Motorola Adventure V750, the carrier's first-ever phone based on Motorola's push-to-talk network. The handset uses EVDO Revision A-based cellular data to provide the same kind of instant talk as Sprint's iDEN service (which moves to the similar QChat format) but with the theoretically improved quality of the 3G network. The clamshell design is also ruggedized with US military-grade protection against dust, drops and other shocks, temperature, and water splashes.
