Multi-layer sensor splits light bands for more accurate color representation

Sigma has unveiled the first of a trio of compact cameras with vertical color separation technology. The dp Quattro collection all use the Foveon X3 "Quattro" image sensor, one which uses three layers of photodiodes assigned to each RGB color, with the manufacturer claiming it allows the camera to capture the hue, value, and chroma for each pixel more accurately than the mosaic-style sensors used in other cameras.

BLU Products tackling off contract market with Quattro handsets

Latin-owned BLU Products has rolled out its new line of quad-core based smartphones running Nvidia’s Tegra 3 processor clocked at 1.5GHz. The Quattro 4.5, Quattro 4.5 HD and Quattro 5.7 HD all center on large displays of 4.5-inches and up to 5.7-inches, while all run Android 4.1 ‘Jelly Bean.’ BLU Products is targetting the lineup at the unlocked market, pricing the products accordingly.

Sharp looks to nature for display inspiration in new AQUOS XL series

Sharp has taken the covers of its new AQUOS Quattron 3D XL TV series. In addition to featuring Sharp’s Quattro four primary color technology that includes a yellow sub-pixel, the new TVs incorporate a new technology Sharp is calling ‘Moth-Eye.’ This is said to significantly reduce glare by cutting light scattering as well as internal reflection.

HTC, Sprint send invite for 'collaboration' event on April 4

HTC and Sprint hint at Android device plans

Sprint and HTC on Tuesday jointly sent invitations to Electronista and others for their "latest collaboration" on April 4. The New York City invitation was sparse on details beyond having Sprint CEO Dan Hesse and HTC president Jason MacKenzie, using a pin in the graphic as a possible clue. While it might be a hint as to a pen-based tablet, it may also just be a reference to Sprint's classic "needle drop" TV ads.

HTC Vertex tablet test photos, dimensions leak out

HTC Android 4.0 tablet to be just 9mm think

An upcoming tablet from HTC, now codenamed Vertex and previously known as Quattro, is in the news again, with a test photo taken from its built-in camera and shared online by Notebook Italia. While the photo does little in terms of new info, it is accompanied by an admittedly unconfirmed 9mm (0.35in) thickness.

HTC may have streaming music and Bluetooth boombox

HTC could get into its own proper music service and more if sources are accurate. Beats co-creator and Interscope-Geffen-A&M chairman Jimmy Iovine was said by GigaOM's contacts to be working with HTC on a streaming music service that would be built-in with each phone and tablet. Details of how it would behave weren't yet ready, but it was being crafted as an anti-Spotify service to avoid giving the incumbent too much of an "iTunes-like" edge.

HTC says Citi damaged its share

HTC on Tuesday was confirmed to have sued Citi Global Markets for allegedly misrepresenting the company's already dim outlook. Deputy chief prosecutor Huang Mou-hsin told Reuters that the smartphone designer had quietly sued in August for allegedly breaking a stock transaction law after HTC's share price collapsed. Its price has been cut to a third of its April value, down to the equivalent of just over $13.

HTC Quattro identified as planned Tegra 3 tablet

HTC's plans for a quad-core tablet were made more real Thursday after a leak showed the device and some details. Now nicknamed the Quattro, the tablet PocketNow has seen in a press render should have the Tegra 3 that earns the Quattro its name. The 10-inch system would simultaneously be HTC's first Beats-equipped slate, getting the better sound and presumably better pack-in headphones.

Company prepping for fight with Google?

Apple has hired two new mobile advertising executives in Europe, according to reports. A former Microsoft EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) sales manager will take charge of Apple's EMEA sales team, while Todd Tran -- formerly of WPP's Group M -- will become the general manager for Europe. The additions form one of Apple's first public moves in advertising since buying mobile specialist Quattro Wireless in early January.

(Updated with Quattro confirmation) Apple will soon announce an acquisition of Quattro Wireless, "several sources" are said to have confirmed. The purchase could be officially revealed later today, and be worth approximately $275 million. Quattro specializes in mobile advertising, and has a number of high-profile clients including Disney, Ford and the NFL.
