RCA soundbar to stream Netflix, Vudu, Pandora
At a pre-CES event, RCA showed off a new sound bar that connects to the web to let subscribers access their Netflix, Pandoara, Vudu and other services. The 37-inch RCA Wi-Fi Home Theater Sound Bar (model RTS739WS) is paired with two satellite speakers a subwoofer to deliver surround sound. There is an HDMI output and an optical audio input for adding audio from a TV or other source such as a set-top or receiver.

Wozniak chastises Paul Allen for Interval suits
Frequent public speaker and Apple co-creator Steve Wozniak in a speech at the Embedded System Conference openly chastised former Microsoft pioneer Paul Allen for his anti-Internet patent lawsuits. Allen's Interval Licensing case was frankly described as "that patent troll thing" and something Wozniak wanted to discourage. Patents themselves were "not worth that much," he said, and Allen was simply hoping to profit from destructive lawsuits rather than be creative and produce something meaningful.

TVs available in 3.5-, 7-inch sizes
RCA has announced that it is ready to ship several portable TVs that can be used to watch digital TV broadcasts or Mobile DTV feeds. The offerings include three standalone models with 3.5- or seven-inch displays, along with a tuner for car infotainment systems. The larger DMT270R centers around a seven-inch LCD with 800x480 resolution, with a built-in battery claimed to extend past four hours of viewing.

Slacker to phase out G2 player
Slacker will stop building its only hardware digital streaming music player, the G2 in the second half of 2010, according to a Wednesday WSJ report. The 2GB device was launched in 2007 and grew to include 4GB and 8GB capacities. Slacker is still selling a 4GB version for $129, while Best Buy has some 8GB models in stock, priced at $249.

RCA Launches Sept 2008
RCA has finished the week with three new devices all meant to modernize the company's line. The Lyra name is being revived with the Lyra Slider, a basic portable media player that uses the same concept as behind slider phones to shrink the size of the device without sacrificing controls. The black and chrome look improves on earlier designs and is matched by a handful of extras that include FM radio and voice recording. RCA is counting on pricing as it ships 4GB and 8GB versions later in the fall for $80 and $100 respectively.

Akimbo Shuts Down
Internet video-on-demand provider Akimbo today has been confirmed by NewTeeVee as having shut its doors. The company says it has so far been unable to raise enough cash to remain profitable for its video delivery services and has decided to drop all but a bare minimum of staff while it seeks a mergers and acquisitions partner to buy up the company's assets. All video services run by the company at present, including Homezone and MavTV, are still running, according to checks.
