Best Buy to ship HTC One on T-Mobile on April 19th
The HTC One will be available on T-Mobile on April 19th, according to the Best Buy website. The electronics retailer is carrying the smartphone at $249 when bought with a T-Mobile contract, or $700 off-contract, writes TmoNews. T-Mobile itself will also sell the HTC One without a service contract for $99, but it will still require monthly payments for the phone on its own, as per the new UnCarrier scheme the company is implementing.

Majority of markets to offer 150Mbps maximum speed
Rogers is expanding the reach of its LTE coverage in Canada to include an extra 44 markets over the next few months, increasing the proportion of the Canadian population covered by LTE to beyond the 60-percent hit last year. The expansion will also see 34 of the 44 new markets become capable of maximum theoretical network speeds of 150Mbps, using the carrier's 2600MHz spectrum band.

Snapdragon processor, 356ppi pixel density confirmed
Training materials for the upcoming BlackBerry 10 devices have leaked online. The manuals, claimed to be from carrier Rogers, give a few more details about the future Research In Motion flagship smartphone, including its "Best in class HTML5" browser, and an expected 70,000 apps and 20 million songs expected to be made available at launch.

Meanwhile, Rogers opens reservations for BB10 phone
BlackBerry maker Research in Motion has begun sending out invitations to media outlets for the unveiling of its latest handset running the newest version of its mobile operating system, BlackBerry 10. The all-touchscreen phone will be revealed at a media event in New York City and other cities around the world on January 30. Meanwhile, Canadian wireless carrier Rogers has announced that it will be carrying the new BlackBerry on its LTE network next year, and Rogers has begun accepting reservations for future BlackBerry customers even though the device has yet to be revealed.

Xperia T coming to Bell, Rogers, and other Canadian carriers this November
Sony's Xperia T, which is also being called the Bond phone on account of its upcoming cameo in the Skyfall blockbuster flick, will arrive this November at various Canadian wireless providers, Sony announced on Wednesday. While a specific date hasn't been nailed down, Bell, Mobilicity, MTS, Rogers, and Videotron will begin carrying the phone in November. Pricing hasn't been revealed, but the associated contracts, as applicable will no doubt last three years and require data plans.

LTE from carrier now covers 60 percent of population
Rogers has expanded its LTE coverage in Canada by 18 new markets. Previously promised in July, the expansion sees the carrier's LTE network grow enough to cover 60-percent of the Canadian population, only months into its second year of deployment in the country. This forms part of the company's $500 million plan for widespread LTE coverage by the end of the year.

HTC Raider, Evo 3D now available, others in September
Canadian carrier Rogers has release the schedule along which several Android handsets on its network will receive updates to Android 4.0. The schedule was revealed earlier today in a post on the Rogers Community Forums. Nine devices are listed in the post, with updates for the devices spread between now and early September.

RIM will launch the 4G LTE-enabled PlayBook tablet on Bell, Rogers and Telus on August 9
RIM revealed on Thursday that its much-anticipated 4G LTE PlayBook tablet will be hitting some of its Canadian stores on August 9. It will only be available through Bell, Rogers, and Telus, though pricing hasn't quite been confirmed. The tablet will use a microSIM card to access the high-speed network.

Aims to cover 60 percent of Canada population with LTE by 2013
Rogers is celebrating the first anniversary of its LTE deployment in Canada by expanding its coverage. After spending $2.2 billion in 2011 and 2012 on the network in general, the carrier will be putting close to $500 million towards its goal of covering the majority of the Canadian population with LTE access by the end of this year.

Our look at HTC's 2012 Android 4 flagship phone
For HTC, 2011 was sometimes considered a write-off: what looked to be a promising year with an early 4G lead saw the company overwhelmed by Apple and Samsung, and even by its own at times confusing lineup with problematic phones like the Thunderbolt. The One series for 2012 is the reboot, a return to basics with an emphasis on high-end design and even stripping back the custom Sense interface layer. We'll determine in our review of the HTC One X in 4G LTE trim, and to some extent the Evo 4G LTE, whether HTC is back to being a fierce competitor for the iPhone and Galaxy roster.

HTC thinks hardware keyboards hurt progress
HTC has kept itself in the limelight in the past day with both revelations of a shift in its attitude towards touch as well as shipping its first LTE-equipped One X. Speaking at the company's Freqs event in Seattle, creative lead Claude Zellweger told MobileBurn and others in attendance that HTC was backing away from hardware keyboards. Partly echoing what the late Steve Jobs said in 2007, he saw physical keyboards as still having some interest but ultimately being obstacles. Going all-touch let HTC have the freedom to design the way it wanted.

RIM may be close to BBM Android and PlayBook 4G
RIM could be getting close to releasing a pair of major projects based on a pair of tentative rumors in mid-week. One possible sighting emerging from TechnoBuffalo had BlackBerry Messenger being run on an Android device for testing purposes. The lone shot had few extra details, but conspicuously showed an "iPhone test" contact entry, suggesting RIM was developing for both platforms.

HTC One X and Xperia S get Canadian dates
Canadian carrier Rogers has dates both official and semi-official for two of its highest-end Android smartphones for the spring. A leak to MobileSyrup of internal Rogers info has put the HTC One X release date as April 20. The provider had already confirmed that its version, which has the same 4G LTE and Snapdragon S4 as the future AT&T model, should cost $170 on a three-year contract.

Nokia Lumia 900 now at Rogers, dated for the UK
Nokia's Lumia 900 has now arrived in Canada in LTE guise, with Rogers offering the Windows Phone for $100 on a three-year voice and data contract. At the same time, Pocket-Lint reported that the HSPA+ version of the handset will be available in the UK on April 27. Electronics retailers Phones 4U and Carphone Warehouse will stock the handset at that time, with the former of the two offering the white version as a UK exclusive.

Brings coverage to total of 7 municipalities
Rogers is expanding its LTE network with clues that key phones are coming soon. The provider is adding support for the high speed data service in two new major Canadian cities outside of Rogers' Ontario core, including Calgary, Alberta and Halifax, Nova Scotia. Rogers indicated that it will be shipping the LTE-capable HTC One X and Nokia Lumia 900 smartphones within weeks, showing that there won't be much gap between the US and Canada.

On Wednesday, Sony announced that it would begin shipping its Xperia S smartphone worldwide. It now appears that the first North American carrier to get the device will be the Canadian provider Rogers. Rogers to hold Batman contest with Lumia 900
Canadian wireless provider Rogers has put up a pre-order page for the Nokia Lumia 900, though it has since been removed. The details included a price of $100 CAD (nearly $101) for a three-year contract, as is typical in Canada. That contract will cost $62.35 for 200 minutes, unlimited text messages, and 1GB of data. Another option at $52.35 would cut the data to 500MB per month.

iPad 2012 gets our thorough look
Once having the tablet arena almost entirely to itself, Apple is now in the middle of a full-scale battle: everyone who could have a tablet does, and even Amazon's Kindle Fire is in the fray at a very low price. The new iPad, then, faces the challenge of not just being the best but of giving buyers a reason to spend more than $199. A record-setting display, new graphics and 4G go a long way, but we'll learn in our review of the new 2012 iPad to see if it's enough to keep the crown.

Nokia Lumia 719 leaks out
A posting on China's Weibo microblogging service has helped confirm a Nokia Windows Phone that had previously only been hinted at. The Lumia 719 appears to be a cosmetic spin on the Lumia 710, with a new button layout and chin but some familiar cues. Its most notable shift might be its radio support. The post referred to China Telecom's CDMA, and China's SRRC had greenlit the device for GSM in an indication that it should be a dual-mode phone that could work with other carriers and countries.

LG L7 may get cheap option at Rogers
LG's L7 style smartphone should make at least one appearance in North America through Rogers. The company's Canadian division told MobileSyrup it expects the largest of the L-Style line to show sometime this year. The Android 4.0 hardware may arrive in the carrier's Smartphone Lite tier, which would let users skip a data plan and pay only for when they need it.

The 4G LTE-capable smartphone is rumored to still be launching at AT&T for just $100 on a two-year plan, but set back. The delay seems to be tied to the handset's lack of technical approval.

Upgraded with Retina Display, quad-core A5X chip
Apple today announced the third-generation iPad at an event in San Francisco. The device's main feature is a 2048x1536 Retina Display, twice the resolution of the iPad 2, rated at 264 pixels per inch; existing apps will be upscaled automatically. Color saturation is said to be 44 percent higher. The tablet also makes the switch to a new dual-core but quad graphics processor, the A5X, which Apple says is built with the Retina Display in mind. Interface-wise the tablet has been improved with features like voice dictation.

Availability from AT&T still a mystery
Internal teardown images of Nokia's flagship Windows Phone, the Lumia 900, have been posted. The photos, which expose some of the smartphone's internal design, have shown up at the FCC. It gave a rare glimpse as to how Nokia's normally sealed-off design is built.

Nokia Lumia 800 gets Canadian release date
Telus set out to claim the earliest Canadian release of the Nokia Lumia 800 on the weekend by with a teaser confirming a March 2 date. The network didn't want to give out prices for the Windows Phone, but it did expect to have all three worldwide colors so far made public, including black, cyan blue, and pink. The Telus edition should be close in spirit to the European make.

HTC One X near confirmed through tips
The HTC One X has had virtually all its details slip through the scoop of numerous official PR files. Greece's FullGSM got both more images of the quad-core phone itself as well as its spec sheet. Images show a slim design braced by the 4.7-inch, 720p Super LCD 2 display and reinforce that it should be using Android 4.0 with the slightly improved Sense 4.0 layer on top.

Liquid Glow is Acer's second MWC phone
Acer has followed up the CloudMobile with a second smartphone due at Mobile World Congress. The Liquid Glow will carry Acer's lightly skinned version of Android 4.0, but with a more modest 3.7-inch display. The newer, curvier design will be its own highlight, with colors such as Alpine White and Sakura Pink on the back that will be matched to the display at the front.

T-Mobile CTO makes iPhone target of 4G upgrades
T-Mobile's CTO Neville Ray used a call discussing the company's latest results to single out the iPhone as an objective. At least the switch to 1,900MHz for HSPA+ was highlighted as focusing on Apple. While he wouldn't say if that involved the LTE network as well, it was apparent the carrier was making changes to potentially court an iPhone launch.

ZTE PF200 and N910 with LTE show ahead of MWC
(Update: pictures) ZTE early Monday gave a sneak peek at two phones it plans to launch at Mobile World Congress next week. Both the PF200 and N910 will have LTE-based 4G and run Android 4.0. At the top, the PF200 will have a 4.3-inch, 540x960 (qHD) display, a 1.5GHz processor (likely a Snapdragon), an eight-megapixel back camera, and rarities of both a 1080p front camera and NFC wireless.

Samsung Galaxy Note mega phone gets our review
Samsung made much ado of the Galaxy Note during the Super Bowl: the massive 5.3-inch screen and pen were tickets to "freedom" from the comparatively tiny iPhone. But are size and handwriting giving smartphone owners real choice, or is it an attempt to shoehorn the phone/tablet crossover into a market that doesn't want it? HTC vows Verizon, Rogers, Bell phone upgrades
HTC has expanded on its Android 4.0 upgrade plans to include more of its North American lineup, most of all Verizon's hardware. iPad 3 should get multi-carrier launch
Fresh details leaked Monday have an LTE iPad 3 shipping for at least two US carriers. AT&T and Verizon would both sell the tablet at 4G speeds, the Wall Street Journal said. Whether or not Sprint's upcoming LTE network wasn't mentioned, but the hardware would have the expected fallback to 3G in areas where LTE wasn't available.

ISPs don't control content court ruled
The Supreme Court of Canada has ruled that Internet access providers are not broadcasters. The ruling means that Canadian Internet providers such as Bell, Rogers, and Telus can't be forced to carry Canadian content on streams or downloads. It also means that they don't have to make payments into funds that subsidize the creation of local Canadian content.

Telus becomes 3rd Canadian carrier with LTE
Telus became the third Canadian carrier with an LTE-based 4G network on Thursday. Starting on February 10 in Halifax, the carrier will have the same 75Mbps peak download speeds and 12-25Mbps averages as the existing networks from rivals Bell and Rogers. It plans to kick off the network with the Galaxy Tab 8.9 LTE, LG's Optimus LTE smartphone, and Novatel's Ovation MC679 modem; the Galaxy Note with LTE will be available on February 14.

Rogers has brought out a new One Number is a new service for the carrier's wireless customers who want to use their computers to talk, text, and video chat from their computers using their cellphone number. Tentative claim has Apple TV set tested in Canada
Unusual rumors on Monday had Apple negotiating for fabled TV set with Canadian telecom providers Bell and Rogers. The respective satellite and cable TV providers were said by the Globe and Mail to be Apple targets as they had "wireless and broadband capabilities" that could be used for launch partners. The two allegedly even had prototypes in their labs.

Rogers LTE gear ads new band to run faster
Canadian carrier Rogers set out to win speed claims with a set of upgraded LTE devices. The Sierra Wireless AirCard 330U and AirCard 763S hotspot both add the 2.6GHz frequency to the existing 1.7GHz and 2.1GHz bands, giving the 4G connection more real-world bandwidth. Where the existing LTE tops out at 12-25Mbps, Rogers expects the new hardware to achieve real speeds of as much as 40Mbps.

Rogers changes protocols to stop web throttling
Canadian wireless provider Rogers on Friday announced it will stop throttling subscribers' Internet connections. In response to a government Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) cease and desist letter, the carrier wrote (PDF) that it will stop the practice in March. The original complaint that led to the move was filed by Jason Koblovsky on behalf of the Canadian Gamers Organization.

Samsung Galaxy Note LTE may hit Canada first
AT&T's launch of the Samsung Galaxy Note might be preempted by a very wide Canadian release. Bell, Rogers, and Telus have all committed early this week to carrying the LTE version of the 5.3-inch phone and tablet crossover. Although Bell and Telus have only listed it as "coming soon," Rogers has officially committed to a mid-February launch, making it probable that all three will launch at or near the same time.

LG Optimus Pad LTE ramps clock speed, 4G
LG took its second shot at tablets in an unusual post-CES launch with the Optimus Pad LTE. A direct sequel to the original we reviewed, it keeps the 8.9-inch, 1280x768 IPS screen and jumps to its namesake 4G for Internet access. Added speed comes through a platform switch, with LG moving from the dual-core 1GHz Tegra 2 to a similarly dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon.

We interview Nokia at CES 2012
Electronista had the chance to interview Nokia Canada's General Manager Richard White on Thursday with hints of future plans. Although careful not to commit to any particular launches, he noted that Nokia was willing to make sure LTE was in any Windows Phone if a carrier set a requirement for it. The strategy would leave room for Verizon Windows Phones from Nokia given the carrier's new refusal to pick up future 3G smartphones.

Motorola sought to raise the baseline on Android smartphones Thursday with a pair of new world models. Bell backs off traffic limits after CRTC decision
Bell Canada has backed off of plans to throttle peer-to-peer traffic on its network following a CRTC decision that could make it illegal. As of March 1, neither Bell itself nor wholesalers on its network will see connections slow down when BitTorrent or similar traffic goes through. The Internet provider spun the decision as a reflection of a "diminishing" ratio of peer-to-peer traffic in favor streaming and other means of getting the same content.

Globalive said to be attempting to expand reach
Canadian wireless carrier Globalive, which is better known by its subsidiary brand Wind Mobile, is reportedly in talks to acquire competing carrier Mobilicity. An unnamed person familiar with the negotiations told Bloomberg that Globalive is attempting to build its presence in the Canadian market to compete with dominant carriers Bell, Rogers and Telus.
