Canadian carrier Rogers suffers nationwide disruption [U]

[Update: service restored after five hours] In an unusual national disruption, Canadian cell carrier Rogers -- the country's largest carrier by subscriber base -- has suffered a near-countrywide failure of wireless voice communications, though 3G and LTE data appears to be unaffected. Between Rogers Wireless and its subsidiaries Fido and Chatr, the company controls about 34 percent of Canada's cell phone market. Customers from Halifax, Nova Scotia to Victoria, British Columbia say they have been without service for much of the evening, while some report partial service.

Rogers launches Wireless Home Phone service using cellular network

Rogers has launched a new service, providing a home or small business phone service over its wireless network instead of through a standard wireline connection. The $29.99 Wireless Home Phone device connects to the Canadian carrier's network, provides ports for a cordless or corded phone, and is able to make and receive calls through the carrier's Wireless Home Phone plan for $10 per month.

Rogers halts vacations

Managers at retail locations of Rogers Wireless, one of Canada's three major cellular companies, are being told not to take vacations during a specific period beginning later this month, a source from within the company claims. The "blackout" stretch is said to extend from June 23rd through July 16th, although no reason for the dates has been given. Apple is widely expected to announce the 3G iPhone on Monday, however, and Rogers has confirmed that it will carry the iPhone "later this year."

Rogers to carry N95?

Nokia's N95 smartphone may finally be coming to a North American carrier, website probing hints. Rogers Wireless, Canada's only GSM carrier, now lists the phone as one of many which can download games from the company's special online store. Though the N95 is already available unlocked in North America, the very recent addition of the N95 to the Rogers website suggests special preparations, whether to carry the N95 officially or simply to support it.
