Extra DivX features provide multi-language subtitles, audio, chapters

Rovi has revealed that Toshiba will be the first television manufacturer to launch a range of DivX Plus Streaming-certified HDTVs. The addition of DivX Plus Streaming to the televisions will allow users to watch streaming content with typical features found in DVD and Blu-ray Disc usage, such as support for multi-language subtitles and audio tracks.

An Apple TV set could require Apple to pay a higher amount of royalties to Rovi, says Piper Jaffray analyst Michael Olson. Rovi owns patents to related to interactive program guide technology, for which Apple is paying an annual license fee. The two companies signed a contract in September 2010.

Apple TV set may use key iPod dev to head project

Apple's now hinted-at TV set is being headed up by one of its most experienced engineers, sources claimed Monday. The team involved is supposed by Bloomberg to be headed up by Jeff Robbin, who helped create the iPod and the iTunes Store. He was deemed so valuable to the late Steve Jobs that the CEO wouldn't let a Time reporter get his name lest he be recruited away.

Rovi sues Hulu for allegedly violating program guide patents

Rovi claims Hulu interface copies patented tech

Rovi on Friday sued Hulu over claims the Internet streaming site copied its technology. The complaint alleges that Hulu's interface for navigating shows copies multiple patents Rovi has for electronic program guides like those seen on a cable or satellite set-top box. The complaint wants tripled damages that would include back pay for the earlier violations.

Rovio has launched 30 new levels of summer-themed gameplay in Angry Birds Seasons for iPhone and Angry Birds Seasons HD for iPad today. The Seasons version of the popular game series, pitting flying birds with unique skills against evil, egg-stealing, green pigs with engineering talents for setting up a variety of bird-safe structures, periodically adds levels related to seasonal, holiday or cultural celebrations, including such additions as Go Green, Get Lucky (St. Patrick's), Trick or Treat, Easter Eggs, Hogs and Kisses (Valentine's Day), Season's Greetings and now Summer Pignic.

Angry Birds one of the first with in-app Android payments

Offers developers monetization for apps

Rovio has introduced one of the first in-app Android payments for its wildly popular Angry Birds. The new in-app payment system is called “Bad Piggy Bank” and gives users the opportunity to purchase the “Mighty Eagle and other cool new content…” by clicking on the Bad Piggy Bank icon. Payments are then made by SMS and charged to a user's next phone bill. Initially, the new functionality has been activated in Finland and then only on the Elisa mobile network for Android devices. However, according to Rovio’s blog the system will come to other carriers and countries in the future.

Rovi makes play for royalties it claims are owing

Rovi Corp. is suing Amazon and its subsidiary IMDb. Rovi, formally known as Macrovision, acquired Gemstar-TV guide in 2008 and in doing so picked up a number of patents pertaining to delivering TV Guides online. Rovi’s suit, filed in Delaware, claims that IMDb’s TV guides infringe five of its patents. Rovi already licenses its TV Guides to several major media stakeholders including Apple, Cisco, Comcast, DirecTV, Microsoft, Samsung, Sony, Time Warner, Verizon and Yahoo.

Rovi buys Sonic for 720 million in digital push

Rovi Corp today confirmed that it was buying Sonic for $720 million in a blend of both cash and stock. The acquisition was characterized as a push beyond TV set-top box guides into digital and centered around both Sonic's RoxioNow video store platform as well as its buyout of DivX from June. The move would help attract Hollywood studios and speed up the adoption of paid online content.

Apple in deal with Rovi for likely Apple TV tech

Apple in an SEC filing today revealed that it has struck a "multi-year agreement" with Rovi in what may be a strategy to support the new Apple TV. The terms are considered secret but will let Apple license Rovi's technology over the course of the deal. Neither company has commented on the plans.
