Call of Duty: Black Ops arrives on Mac September 27
Aspyr is releasing popular shooter Call of Duty: Black Ops for the Macintosh. The game will include the First Strike downloadable content package, with the last two DLC packages available before Christmas as a single package for $25. The game requires a minimum 2.4 GHz processor, 4GB of RAM, and a Radeon HD 3870 or Nvidia 650M or greater. Until release, the three other Call of Duty titles are half off. Call of Duty: Black Ops will ship on September 27 and retails for $50 on the Mac App Store and Steam, or for $45 on Aspyr's GameAgent.

Works with Flash, DivX Plus HD, MKV
Roxio has released Toast 11 and Toast 11 Pro, offering a major redesign and a new interface. The apps sport tools for repairing, transcoding and burning media, and the new Pro version incorporates software like Photoshop Elements to help with media production. Both titles have various upgrades over Toast 10, like saving customized video profiles, an improved updating mechanism, and the ability to burn to several drives simultaneously. Other headliners in v11 are direct uploads to Facebook, YouTube or Vimeo; the locations of YouTube videos can posted on Twitter.

Rovi buys Sonic for 720 million in digital push
Rovi Corp today confirmed that it was buying Sonic for $720 million in a blend of both cash and stock. The acquisition was characterized as a push beyond TV set-top box guides into digital and centered around both Sonic's RoxioNow video store platform as well as its buyout of DivX from June. The move would help attract Hollywood studios and speed up the adoption of paid online content.

Sonic acquires DivX to improve Roxio
Sonic today acquired video codec maker DivX for $3.75 per share, or the equivalent of $323 million. The deal gives the owner of Roxio one of the more popular video formats and are intended to give Sonic a better means of providing video over the Internet, especially for home electronics. Many Blu-ray and DVD players, TVs, and set-top boxes already support DivX videos, and DivX is already using copy protection approved by movie studios, Sonic said.

Best Buy promises Blue Sky video downloads
Electronics retailer giant Best Buy announced on its Twitter page that it will offer a video-on-demand service dubbed Blue Sky for its Reward Zone Premium Silver members. Unlike a similar promised service that was announced last year, this one will be offered to the store chain's Reward Zone Premium Silver members. These members will be able to rent one movie every month.

Best Buy deal to give online movies as bonus
Best Buy today struck a deal with Roxio to create a unique online and DVD hybrid movie service for the big-box retailer. The unnamed project hopes to give users buy once, play anywhere privileges: those who buy a DVD in-store will then have access to a CinemaNow-based portal for watching movies both on computers as well as on smartphones and Internet-aware Blu-ray players. Many of the movies will be new releases instead of reprints or old titles.

Import/export Flash Videos, works with AVCHD/Lite
Roxio's Popcorn 4 video conversion software is available today, with support for Adobe Flash web video, AVCHD and AVCHD lite, and the ability to preview how a converted file will look before processing the entire file. Designed to allow capture and transfer from "virtually any video source," the software includes device profiles that allow users to convert video optimized for consumer devices and gaming consoles. Also new to this version is the ability to directly upload to YouTube.

Sonic, Zip movie downloads
Canadian rent-by-mail DVD service Zip.ca said today that it's in talks with Sonic Solutions, the owner of the Roxio CinemaNow movie download service, to bring the first large-scale movie download service in Canada. The partnership will allow PC and portable multimedia device users to download TV shows and movies, making it somewhat akin to the streaming feature Netflix offers its US customers; it's not clear if Zip would shadow this format.

Wii to get CinemaNow
Sonic Solutions, the company behind Roxio, on Thursday announced its streaming movie service CinemaNow will be made available for the Nintendo Wii. Sonic will partner with Fujisoft to bring the former's content to the game console via the latter's video-on-demand Everyone's Theater Wii service. While the announcement only covers Japan, its successful integration potentially leads to the service arriving in other countries as well. CinemaNow offers more than 1,500 streaming movies, short films, and concerts to buy or rent.

Roxio updates Toast
Sonic Solutions' Roxio has updated its stalwart Toast Titanium and Titanium Pro disc burning and media conversion software, adding enhanced iPhone streaming, TIVo support, an audiobook creation tool and archiving support for AVCHD video. The Pro version comes bundled with a plug-in for Blu-ray support, SmartSound Sonicfire Pro, BIAS SoundSoap, LightZone and FotoMagico. Both versions of Toast are available now.
