Phone makes official N. Am. in Canada
Late last month, Samsung confirmed that it was bringing the Galaxy S II smartphone to North America by way of Canada. None of the three Canadian providers, Bell, SaskTel and Virgin, offered any date, beyond generically this summer, as to when it would be available. Bell has now quietly revealed that it will arrive July 21.
Galaxy S II confirmed for Bell, SaskTel, Virgin
Samsung brought the Galaxy S II to North America for the first time with word it was coming to three wireless providers in Canada. This includes Bell, where the handset will be known as the Galaxy S II 4G, along with SaskTel and Virgin Mobile. The dual-core, Android 2.3-powered handset sports a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus touchscreen and supports 3G HSPA+ data networks for up to 21Mbps download speeds.
Handset to be available "in the next month"
Saskatchewan-based cellular carrier SaskTel is the first North American carrier to confirm plans to launch Samsung's Galaxy S II smartphone. The timing of the announcement, which promises a ship within the next month, suggests the device may be on track for a wider launch through several North American carriers sometime in July.
SaskTel promises to launch HSPA+ on August 16
Canadian wireless provider SaskTel on Tuesday said it is beginning a technical trial of its HSPA+ 3G data network. Called 3G+, the service will be limited to certain SaskTel employees, and last for six weeks. The idea is to find and resolve any technical issues for a problem-free commercial experience, which is due to go online August 16.
Carrier retracts earlier confident assertion
An earlier claim by SaskTel's CEO, Robert Watson, should not be taken as evidence of a new iPhone coming in June or early July, a carrier spokesperson now says. Watson's response was "not a confirmation of a release of a new version of the iPhone," the spokesperson insists. "The President was commenting on information that has been reported publicly and on the Internet for several months, which has speculated on the timing of a new release," a statement concludes.
May back hints of June 22nd announcement
The fourth-generation iPhone should launch by or before July 1st, hints the CEO of regional Canadian carrier SaskTel. Speaking in an interview, Robert Watson comments that the carrier is currently finishing up its 3G network, which should become active by July 1st. A new iPhone will be available for SaskTel subscribers at the same time, says Watson.
