PlayStation 4 gets possible major new leak
Gradually mounting talk of early PlayStation 4 plans culminated Wednesday with a potentially telling rumor. Believed to be codenamed Orbis or "circle," possibly to make it part of a "circle of life" with the Vita, the system outlined to Kotaku would not just break from using the Cell processor but from the entire Power and NVIDIA graphics combo. Instead, it would reportedly use a 64-bit, x86-based AMD processor as well as graphics based on AMD's Southern Island core, used in the Radeon HD 7700 series and up.
New Snow Leopard build holds AMD Radeon 6000
The latest Mac OS X 10.6.5 beta already contains references to AMD's Radeon HD 6000 series graphics, explorers discovered this weekend. An ATIRadeonX3000 kernel extension found by Netkas refers to virtually the entire Southern Islands family, including the Antilles Pro and XT parts that may be the initial mobile chips. The chips will actually be the originally planned Northern Islands family relabeled and should run on a 40 nanometer process.
AMD Southern Island codenames revealed by driver
A new driver release from ATI, Catalyst 10.8, has brought with it 36 codenames of future hardware. The product codenames likely refer to next-generation ATI graphics processors, dubbed Southern Islands but likely to make up the ATI Radeon 6000 series. The codenames are prefixed by NI, which could stand for Northern Islands, a codename used for the next-gen GPUs when they were thought to be based on 40nm architecture rather than 28nm as the upcoming ones are expected to be.
