Sale of assets exceeds $72 million, some IP still unsold

Game published THQ has announced that it has received court approval for asset selloff, and will split following the sale. The transaction, worth about $72 million will see Relic Studios sold to Sega for $22.3 million, with Volition, Inc headed to Sega Corporation for $5.9 million. Other properties are headed to Crytek, Take Two, and Ubisoft. The fates of other intellectual properties owned by THQ, and the company's publishing business are not part of the sale process.

Game publisher THQ delays games, suspends financial forecast

Poor title performance, uDraw costs cited as reasons

While game publisher THQ exceeded its most recent quarterly projections, the company has warned that three of its titles will be released significantly later than previously planned, and as a result it will need to generate additional capital to continue operations. All financial guidance for the remainder of the fiscal year through March 2013 has been suspended.

Apple sued for allegedly copying patent with Disk Utility

Software Restore Solutions claims Apple copying

Software Restore Solutions late Wednesday sued Apple (below) over claims Mac OS X copied its technology. According to the complaint, "at least" the Disk Utility feature in every version of Mac OS X from the 2001 original through to Snow Leopard copies one claim in a workgroup network manager patent from 1998. Apple supposedly knows the automated repair features could infringe on the patent but has shown "deliberate indifference" towards the consequences.

THQ intros Wii drawing tablet with games

Launch titles include Pictionary

THQ has unveiled its uDraw GameTablet that offers a new way of interacting with Nintendo’s Wii console. The device is a small handheld tablet with a four-inch by six-inch drawing space and comes with a detachable, pressure-sensitive stylus. The Wii Remote docks with the tablet, allowing the device to draw power directly from the original controller.

Uses PS3 Arc multiple times in call with investors

THQ chief executive officer Brian Farrell may have given more credence to previous reports that the new PlayStation 3 motion controller device will be named the Playstation Arc. In a call with investors, Farrell referred to the new controller as the Playstation Arc repeatedly, in both his prepared remarks and during the Q&A session that followed.

Microsoft's Natal out late in 2010, says THQ boss

Natal out by fall of 2010

Game maker THQ's chief Brian Farrell recently corroborated last week's report that Microsoft's Project Natal body controller for the Xbox 360 will be out late in 2010. Speaking in a conference call regarding THQ's earnings report, Farrell said Natal from Microsoft is a "platform addition, coming late next year," when asked about market changes in the upcoming cycle.
