Chumby ceases to exist, IP up for sale
Chumby has closed down according to former CEO Derrick Oien. The company had attempted to redevelop its widget platform for smart TVs and had released the NeTV. It had also signed deals with LG and Best Buy, however speaking to The Verge, Oien says that investors finally decided to pull out leaving its staff to be largely absorbed by Technicolor.

Free GoPro firmware available this summer
At NAB 2012 today,Technicolor and GoPro revealed the new GoPro Protune firmware update, integrating the CineStyle color profile into the popular HD Hero2 Camera line. The firmware update, which will be available for free this summer, adds both 24 frames per second recording and a new 35 Mbps recording data rate.

Google said looking for Motorola set-top buyer
Google is already looking to sell the set-top box business it will get as part of the $12.5 billion buy of Motorola Mobility, the New York Post claimed. In August, during the announcement of the purchase, the plan was to make the business work under Google's tutelage. Cable operators have been slow to buy Motorola set-tops ever since the Google buy was announced.

Intel Atom E600 to reach embedded hardware
Intel used the second day of its Developer Forum to show the production version of its Tunnel Creek processor. The newly re-labeled Atom E600 (PDF) is built for embedded devices like tablets, in-car systems and fixed phones. Apart from putting all main functions on the processor, it also has an open PCI Express interface to connect to not just non-Intel chipsets but other components.

TiVo still developing tru2way, DirecTV due 2010
During a quarterly earnings call this week, DVR maker TiVo revealed that it is still working on bringing tru2way technology to its set-top boxes. This would allow two-way interaction over cable set-tops, including services such as games, chat, web browsing and shopping. At the same time, CEO Tom Rogers said DirecTV TiVo is still scheduled for a 2010 release, but there is now some doubt as to whether this can happen before 2011.

Samsung shows 3D LED TVs with 2D to 3D conversion
At its press conference on Wednesday afternoon in Las Vegas, Samsung showed off a new LED HDTV series, comprised of the LED9000, LED8000 and LED7000. The 9000 is the flagship and, at just 0.3 inches thick, or about the width of a pencil, is the slimmest LED TV made to date, Samsung says. Part of what the company is calling the widest 3D TV product range offering, all three are compatible with the Blu-ray 3D standard. This flagship TV is the headline-grabber and ships with a full touchscreen remote control that will let users watch TV on the remote itself while a Blu-ray movie is playing on the TV screen.
