New eight-bay array drives up to 1.3GB/sec fully loaded
Storage solutions provider G-Technology announced the first extension of its Studio line, the G-Speed Studio XL. Expanding on the two–bay G-RAID Studio and four-bay G-Speed Studio Thunderbolt 2 storage solutions which launched earlier this year, the G-Speed Studio XL holds up to eight removable enterprise-class 7,200 RPM hard drives. Fully populated and properly configured, the array is capable of moving in excess of 1.3GB per second.
New dock features dual USB 3.0, eSATA, audio, pass-through Thunderbolt
HighPoint Technologies has launched the "world's first" Thunderbolt 2-powered connectivity dock, the RocketStor 6351A. Each of the dual five-gigabit-per-second USB 3.0 ports and 6Gb per second eSATA port is powered by dedicated controller, allowing for peak speed for connected peripherals. Audio and Gigabit Ethernet ports round out connectivity options, with a pass-through Thunderbolt 2 port to daisy chain up to five devices downstream of the dock.
RHA to debut new T10i in-ear headphones September 5
British headphone producer RHA has announced the upcoming release of its latest in-ear headphones, the T10i. Featuring handmade dynamic drivers, the noise-cancelling headphones possess a custom tuning filter system that allows for frequency response adjustment. Filter adjustments are also included for bass and treble response. Each high-fidelity driver is encased in an ergonomic stainless steel housing; other features include a multi-core, 1.35m (53-inch) oxygen-free copper cable with three-button remote and microphone (suitable for Apple devices) and mouldable over-ear hooks. Priced at $200, the T10i headphones will be available for purchase in Apple stores worldwide starting September 5.
Dropbox update for iOS adds higher fidelity previews for Word and PowerPoint documents
Cloud storage platform Dropbox has updated its iOS app today. Allowing users to access any file saved to their Dropbox from an iOS device, v3.3 can now offer search within Word and PowerPoint documents. Larger animated GIFs are supported, and improved caching allows the app to use less data and disk space.
Server allows Mac Pros to be installed horizontally in a rack with additional devices
Sonnet Technologies announced that its rackmount system for the newest version of the Mac Pro is available starting today. The xMac Pro Server, features a Thunderbolt 2-to-PCI Express expansion system housed inside a custom 4U enclosure. A mobile expansion unit has also created, to allow additional options to be installed without taking up any more rack space.
Felix announces integrated kickstand case for iPad Air
Mobile accessories creator Felix has announced the release of its new case for iPad Air. The FlipBook Air consists of a case with an integrated kickstand, featuring the aesthetic of a book cover. Composed of faux leather, the case includes a smart cover function that wakes the iPad upon opening, and engages the sleep function when it is closed. Its patented kickstand supports both horizontal and vertical viewing, and features proprietary air bladder technology for additional protection of one's tablet.
Direct Ethernet competitor moves data at 10Gb per second
In a direct challenge to the venerable networking standard Ethernet, Intel on Monday introduced Thunderbolt Networking -- an interconnect standard for Thunderbolt 2-equipped devices that can transfer data at up to 10 gigabits (Gb) per second, 10 times faster than the previous limit. Mac users with Thunderbolt 2 devices running OS X Mavericks already have the new feature built-in, with PC drivers for Windows said to be coming "soon."
Hardware solution supports eight SAS, SATA drives in RAID, more with multipliers
One of the first hardware RAID adapters for Thunderbolt 2 has popped up on the market from accessory maker HighPoint. The RocketStor 6328 features seven RAID configurations, supporting SAS and SATA hard drives and solid state drives.
LaCie's new portable external hard drive released
Seagate Technology's premium brand, LaCie, has released its new LaCie Little Big Disk, featuring Thunderbolt 2. Offering speeds up to 1.38GB per second, the drive's Thunderbolt 2 connectivity allows for effective manipulation of 4K video. The LaCie Little Big Disk is capable of daisy-chaining with its dual Thunderbolt 2 ports, and its two heat-dissipating aluminum plates with a thermoregulated fan quietly cool its SSD drives. Priced at $1,300, the LaCie Little Big Disk is available in a 1TB SSD capacity.
AccuWeather launches MinuteCast on web version, iPhone and iPod touch app
Weather prediction and reporting app AccuWeather has launched its new MinuteCast feature. Now available for its web version as well as its iOS 7-optimized app for iPhone and iPod touch, MinuteCast gives users a continually updated forecast, ideal for making decisions based on weather. MinuteCast predicts start and end times for precipitation on a by-the-minute basis for the next two hours, specific to a user's exact street address. Precipitation is tracked at approximately a half square mile, and refreshed every five minutes to provide users with the most relevant and accurate forecast available.
Realmac Software rectifies confusion with Clear by offering it free for limited time
Realmac has announced an upcoming, limited-time offer, making Clear free, as part of its consolidation process. A new version of productivity to-do list app Clear was released last year, called Clear+. Built as a universal app for iOS 7, Clear+ was structured as a paid upgrade, with the original version removed from the App Store. Clear customers, according to Dan Counsell of Realmac Software, reported confusion and frustration over the switch to charging for the update version, so Realmac updated the old version of Clear for iOS 7 and reintroduced it.
Mind Candy's Moshi Monster Village for iOS now available worldwide
Though it launched in the UK App Store last December, Mind Candy has just released its iOS game Moshi Monsters Village on a worldwide scale. Players build houses to care for rescued Moshling creatures that have been captured by the villainous Dr. Strangelove, in a three-dimensional, animated world. Villages can be personalized with decorations, and Moshlings are rescued through the playing of the mini-games included.
Thunderbolt optical cables now available in 10-, 20-, and 30-meter length options
Other World Computing today at CES 2014 announced that it has broadened its array of OWC Thunderbolt cable offerings with three new optical cable lengths of 10-, 20-, and 30-meters. Longer length options allow for noisy storage appliances to be moved to an equipment closet for a quieter and more productive workspace. Utilizing the latest Thunderbolt chipsets for high-speed 10GB-per-second Thunderbolt and 20GB-per-second Thunderbolt 2 devices, the extended cables can enhance video workflow with support for faster 4K video transfer and 4K display capabilities through DisplayPort 1.2 technology.
New model features optional Thunderbolt 2 connectivity
HP today unveiled the second generation of its all-in-one workstation with a 27-inch display, the HP Z1 G2. The new model is available with a range of processor choices, including some of the new Xeon processor line. The unit also includes Windows 8 Touch, and optional Thunderbolt 2 capabilities.

HP, Lenovo unable to match Apple on price, performance
A lengthy analysis of the new Mac Pro by hardware enthusiast site Anandtech has found that Apple's latest desktop not only offers a design that is unmatched in the industry, but that its mix of custom features (like Thunderbolt 2 support on the motherboard and special dual FirePro graphics cards) and low price (for a workstation of this caliber) make it a compelling option for creative professionals, and cheaper than other manufacturers' options.
New devices allow for daisy-chaining of up to six Thunderbolt 2 peripherals
Promise Technology today announced Pegasus2 and SANLink2, the first storage solutions to use the new Thunderbolt 2 protocol. The Pegasus2 line of hardware RAID solutions accelerates and simplifies 4K workflows, offering RAID protection in a compact and portable enclosure at maximum data transfer rates allowed through Thunderbolt 2. SANLink2, a Thunderbolt 2 to 8G Fibre Channel bridge, alleviates storage bottlenecks for desktop and portable computing systems by providing direct connectivity to an external Fibre Channel Storage Area Network (SAN) such as a VTrak x30 RAID storage system or a VTrak A-Class shared SAN filesystem.
13- and 15-inch now standard with Retina display, Haswell
As part of its wide-ranging presentation of new products today, Apple has announced new MacBook Pro models that are available immediately. Retina-quality displays are now standard across the line, while prices on the starter models have dropped by $200. The basic 13-inch model now sports a 2.4Ghz i5 "Haswell" processor, 4GB of RAM standard and a 128GB SSD (PCIe-based) for storage, along with 802.11ac for Wi-Fi and Thunderbolt 2 for connectors. Both models are 0.71 inches thick, with the 13-inch weighing 3.46 pounds and the 15-inch model just one pound heavier.
New 4k workflow device will ship when Thunderbolt 2 Mac Pro is available
Aja Video Systems is previewing its new Io 4k, an evolution of its devices for professional video I/O which is now updated and customized for Thunderbolt 2 technology and 4K workflows. Io 4K connects to any Thunderbolt 2-enabled device such as the forthcoming new Mac Pro, and offers an additional Thunderbolt 2 port for daisy-chaining other peripherals, such as high-resolution displays and high-capacity storage.
New Z87 Deluxe/Quad motherboard features 16 USB ports, Thunderbolt 2
Asus has revealed the Z87-Deluxe/Quad, the first motherboard with Thunderbolt 2 technology certified by Intel. Based on the new Intel Z87 chipset and ready for the latest fourth-generation "Haswell" Intel Core processors, the ASUS Z87-Deluxe/Quad ATX motherboard has a pair of Thunderbolt 2 ports for connecting up to 12 devices at once. Each port has up to 20Gbit/s transfer rate and is backward-compatible with the original Thunderbolt specification.
