Rumors talk 5K Apple monitor, multiple colors for 12-inch MacBook Air

09/12, 10:01am

4K monitor resolution more likely

Apple may be prepared to launch a 5120x2880 monitor later this year, says an LCD market research firm, WitsView. That would however be beyond the limits of the DisplayPort 1.2 standard used in Thunderbolt 2; when limited to a single cable, even a Mac Pro can only support a 4K display at specific refresh rates. A more likely resolution would therefore be 4096x2160, DisplayPort's current maximum. At the same time, Dell has announced a 5K display, and whatever technology that uses could presumably be adopted by Apple.

To keep the Ethernet connection alive for Intel's vPro remote management or for Windows 8's Connected Standby mode, however, the docking port would need to have direct access to the Ethernet chipset inside.

MacBook Air 2011 uses mini Eagle Ridge chip

An investigation into the new MacBook Air's internals has revealed that Apple is using a new, relatively untested Thunderbolt chip.
