Helpful real-time translation keyboard for iOS 8
There's no doubt that the world has gotten much smaller in recent decades. Thanks to mass media and the Internet, most of the world is connected constantly. While this is often quite beneficial, there's still the issue of language differences. However, thanks to technology, even that barrier is constantly being chipped away at. We took a look at Slated, a translation keyboard designed by Gist, that aims to help connect users with those who speak another language.
Future update to Google Translate will use live camera feed
A future update to Google Translate will apparently include technology acquired from the company's purchase of Quest Visual, the developer of the Word Lens translation app. The Translate app will soon include a "Live Translation" mode, which will automatically change the text displayed from a live camera feed from one language to another.
Menubar app supports 80 languages, voice translation, currently 50 percent off
The popular translation app iTranslate, previously for iOS devices only, arrived on the Mac on Thursday with the release of iTranslate for the Mac on the Mac App Store. The program, which is accessed from the menubar when running, offers instant translation with support for over 80 languages. Users simply input or paste text and the program provides a translation into the desired language. It also feature voice output so that users can hear the correct pronunciation of a word or phrase.
Skype to offer voice translation, beta expected late this year
Microsoft today announced its plans to release a real-time translation of voice conversations using Skype. Skype Translator will allow users to speak in their native language to another user who speaks a different language, with the software automatically translating it to the other person. The beta is anticipated to be released later this year, with its commercial availability estimated for debut within the next two and a half years. In its current development stage, translation can convert between English to German. The translation service may be a paid feature.
System could allow for conversations between people to be translated automatically
Google is reportedly working on a real-time translation system for mobile phones. The search company has apparently reached a point where early prototypes for the system have shown to work extremely efficiently, with Android product management vice president Hugo Barra claiming to have reached "close to 100% accuracy."
Japanese carrier also releasing AR translation app
Japan's NTT DoCoMo is set to launch the world's first Android-based commercial mobile service for conversation translation. Hanashite Hon'yaku provides automatic voice translations between Japanese and another of three languages, with results not only being displayed on-screen, but read out to each side of the conversation as by a voice synthesizer.
Android app translates text in live camera feed
Quest Visual has ported its video-based translation app to Android. Word Lens ($5, Google Play) uses the handset's camera and displays the live feed on the screen with all visible words in a selected language translated into another instantly, as if they were quickly "Photoshopped" into the live video.
Point-and-translate works instantly
Quest Visual has brought its first application to the App Store, an instant video translation of printed material called Word Lens that does real-time visual translation by utilizing the video camera found in the two current iPhones and the fourth-generation iPod Touch. Users simply hold up the camera to any printed sign, menu or clearly-printed material and it is both translated and "photoshopped" back into the natural background instantly.
Restored support for Trust, Thunderbird
TranslateIt! for Mac, a tool that can translate and define text on-the-fly in all Cocoa-based Mac apps, has been reworked into a new version, called i3, that offers a new dictionary format, new text translation tool, adds a number of European localizations, improves the suggestions search engine, adds F-Script support and restores support for Thunderbird and Trust, among other improvements.

Recosoft has launched PDF2Office 5.1, updating it PDF translation software which focuses on Microsoft Office compatibility. PDF2Office recovers the data stored in PDF documents for use in Word, Excel and PowerPoint. It recovers page breaks, graphics, annotations and formatting. PDF2Office Services also support Pages, Keynote and TextEdit.
Geotagalog 1.4 ($20) is a utility for geotagging photos with a GPS tracklog. The software combines digital photos with location data that has been recorded into a GPS tracklog and shows a live location preview with mouseover thumbnails allowing a user to visually verify that tags are matched correctly. Version 1.4 adds the ability to select individual files instead of just folders and the option to import non-geotaggable items. Users can hover the pointer over an unfamiliar word and TranslateIt! will look up that word and show its translation in a pop-up window. The software can also translate phrases from the clipboard or manually entered text. The update has improved overall compatibility with Safari 4 and features support for most popular online dictionary/translation services. Version 10.1 has also added French pronunciations and included updates for the English-German, English-Spanish, and French-English dictionaries.

TranslateIt! 9.7 update
RealSofts.com has updated TranslateIt! for Mac to v9.7, adding hover support, full text translation and new dictionaries. Hover support will allow users to translate a word by moving the pointer over an unfamiliar word (in any Cocoa application), with the translation in a pop-up window. Version 9.7 also adds morphology support, a multilingual user interface and custom dictionary building capabilities.
