HItachi Z7K500 sets speed and thinness records

Hitachi staked out a claim as the top builder of thin hard drives on Wednesday through a 500GB version of the Travelstar Z7K500. The drive is the first to hit a half-terabyte at the slimmer 7mm height while keeping a full 7,200RPM spin speed and just one drive platter. Along with being the first to have both a 6Gbps SATA3 connection and a 32MB buffer, it's billed as being not just faster than other 7mm drives but faster than many regular 9mm drives as well.

Hitachi Z5K500 first 500GB drive at 7mm

Hitachi today claimed a minor record by shipping the TravelStar Z5K500. The 2.5-inch, 5,400RPM disk is the first drive 7mm thick to reach 500GB, bumping up from the earlier 320GB peak. It still uses a single platter but should now cover most people's needs even in a notebook too thin for a 9.5mm drive.

Hitachi Travelstar 7mm gets 7200RPM, PVR ready

Hitachi claimed a lead in mobile hard drives today by rolling out some of the most advanced 7mm (0.28in) drives to date. The Travelstar Z7K320 leads the way and is the first 7,200RPM disk in the ultra-thin size: it can provide near desktop-level performance but opens the door to thinner notebooks. It also fits in a typical 9.5mm tall (0.37in) notebook drive bay and can provide extra space for cooling or shock guards.

Hitachi Travelstar 5K500B

Hitachi is releasing a new family of Travelstar 2.5-inch drives with improved security features, and reduced power use for longer battery life. The Travelstar 5K500.B line will be available in several sizes ranging from 160 to 500GB operating at 5400RPM with an 8MB cache. Hitachi says it expects the 5K500.B will be the first hard drive line to comply with the new Storage Security specification being finalized by the Trusted Security Group. The optional Bulk Data Encryption feature encrypts data as it is written to the drive and reverses this as information is retrieved, preventing casual data theft online.

Hitachi Travelstar 7K320

Hitachi this morning bolstered its drive lineup through the addition of the Travelstar 7K320. Launching shortly after a similar effort by Fujitsu, the hard disk purports to have both large storage and fast transfers with 320GB for holding data and a 7,200RPM disk speed. Despite the speed boost, the drive reportedly consumes no more power than a 5,400RPM equivalent. It also boasts one of the most resilient designs in the category, according to Hitachi: the 7K320 can absorb 400Gs of shock even while in full use.
