AMD launches Trinity APUs, says it trumps Intel

AMD has formally launched its next-generation Trinity Accelerated Processing Units (APUs). The company says that the improvements in architecture and Piledriver core has resulted in a chip that is twice as efficient per watt as its predecessor the Llano, despite sticking with a 32nm fabrication process. AMD says that based on price, its chips offer superior performance for each dollar spent against Intelís latest 22nm Ivy Bridge (3rd generation Core series) processors.

AMD delivers next-gen Fusion mobile processors

AMD sent word late Thursday that it was already shipping processors based on the Trinity and Brazos 2.0 platforms. The A-series parts based on Trinity theoretically double the performance for the same amount of energy while also modernizing the in-chip graphics. As before, the chips are expected to focus mostly on dual-core A6 and quad-core A8 parts.

HP slips notebooks with Intel Ivy Bridge, AMD Trinity

HP Pavilion dv4, dv6, dv7, g4 show future chips

HP has inadvertently confirmed plans from both AMD and Intel for future processors through a slew of notebook listings. The Pavilion dv4, dv6, and dv7 all have Intel's Ivy Bridge inside. The smaller two systems are using the quad 2.3GHz Core i7-3610M, while the dv7 has a similarly four-core 2.6GHz Core i7-3720QM.

AMD shares future chip plans, focus on 28nm dies

Computer chipmaker AMD took the opportunity at its yearly Financial Analyst Day to show off upcoming products for 2012 and 2013. They include CPUs and APUs (combined CPU and graphics) for ultrathin notebooks, tablets, all-in-ones, desktops, and servers, with most focusing on lower power use. Some are also designed with the developing world in mind and accessing the cloud.

Apple leads 2011 Japanese tablet share by dominant margin

Acer, Samsung in distant second-place spots

The iPad was the overwhelming leader in the Japanese tablet market during 2011, data from tracking firm BCN indicates. Apple held a 63.6 percent share of the Japanese market, easily eclipsing its closest rivals. Acer ranked second with just 9.8 percent, for instance, while Samsung came in third at 5.3 percent. Apple claimed second place in terms of tablet accessories with 13.3 percent; the company was flanked by Elecom at 21.6 percent, and Trinity at 12.8 percent.

AMD mobile processor roadmap shows Trinity, more

Roadmap reveals Llano to be replaced with Trinity

Leaked AMD mobile platform roadmaps from German forum board 3D Center reveal that the Llano chip replacement, Trinity, is due to begin shipping in the winter of 2012, among other tidbits. There will be four specific models of the chip offered, though no specifics are available yet. A Bulldozer-based Piledriver core will be the basis, which will also underpin the company's upcoming AMD FX-series of processors.

AMD previews Khrishna, Trinity, Wichita, Komodo processors

AMD teases Khrishna and other Bobcat chips

AMD as part of the same preview that showed the first shipping Fusion chips also provided the codenames for some of its longer term processor launches. Khrishna and Wichita will use a more power-efficient 28 nanometer design with two and four cores respectively. Both will cover virtually the entire range and scale from as small as a tablet to notebooks and some desktops.
