Retailer to start selling high-resolution 4K televisions before holiday season
Seiki is bringing a new low-priced 55-inch Ultra HD television to the United States, being sold exclusively through Sears. The television, capable of showing 4K-resolution video, will be sold through the retailer for $1,500, and will be appearing in more than 500 Sears retail stores, just in time for the holiday shopping period.
Displays for businesses, consumers with 4K resolutions on show
Samsung will be showcasing a pair of high-resolution monitors at the IFA 2013 tradeshow in Germany next month. A video wall measuring 98 inches and a 31.5-inch monitor from the company will appear at the event, with both sporting an Ultra HD resolution, the same as the display panels used in its flagship 85-inch S9 television.
Initial broadcasts pave the way to commercialization in 2014
Broadcasters in South Korea are attempting to provide owners of Ultra HD televisions with suitable content for the high-resolution televisions. Five members of the Korean Cable Television and Telecommunications Association have started broadcasting a small group of channels with the 4K content, six months ahead of its original plan, and a year earlier than similar proposals in Japan.
New models upscale content to UHD with Quadmatic Picture Engine
Samsung's Ultra High-Definition (UHD) TV family is expanding in the United States. The company announced its next wave of UHD TV models with the introduction of the F9000 line. The new 55- and 65-inch models will be available for pre-order starting July 21.
Ultra-HD display uses IGZO panel, has 140ppi pixel density
Asus has opened up pre-orders for its first UHD-resolution consumer-level monitor, one the company announced in May alongside a possible 39-inch version. The PQ321Q IGZO LED-backlit display measures 31.5-inch diagonally, is capable of displaying 4K images at a resolution of 3840x2160 at 60Hz with 10-bit RGB color.
58-inch 4K-capable TV to go on sale in the US for $5,000
Toshiba has revealed that it will be releasing three 4K televisions in the United States, shortly after similar Ultra HD televisions go on sale in Japan. Starting in August, the L9300U series of UHDTVs will go on sale with a choice of three screen sizes, all of which will use the company's CEVO 4K Quad+Dual Core processor and CQ Engine for image processing and upscaling HD content to 4K resolution.
Passed THX 4K certification tested upscaling of HD content
Sharp will launch its first THX-certified 4K-resolution television in the United States in August. The 70-inch Aquos Ultra HD LED TV, the larger of two models announced for sale in Japan last month, will also be the first television of its type to have the visual certification, thanks to it passing through four hundred performance tests.
Smaller screen follows earlier 50-inch UHDTV launch in April
Television producer Seiki is planning to release a new UHD TV measuring 39 inches before the end of this month for $699. The Ultra-HD television, relatively cheap compared to some other UHDTV offerings, comes after the company released a 50-inch version in April that was also capable of displaying video at the 3840x2160 resolution typically associated with 4K images.

Samsung has revealed the prices and more release details for its 55-inch and 65-inch UHD TVs in South Korea. The manufacturer will be opening up its two 4K-capable HDTVs for pre-order between June 1st and June 30th through department stores, with shipments to customers expected to start shortly after the pre-order period ends.
New 4K-capable televisions include optional DVR with 6-channel recording
Toshiba has revealed it will be launching a new set of 4K-capable televisions in Japan. The Regza Z8X range of UHDTVs, measuring 58, 65, and 84 inches, will include native support for NHK's "Hybridcast," a system the Japanese broadcaster is trialling which adds more information to TV programming through an Internet service.

Sharp is preparing to sell a pair of Ultra HD TVs in Japan, under the Aquos UD1 banner. The LC-60UD1 and LC-70UD1, measuring 60 inches and 70 inches respectively, both take advantage of Sharp's previously-demonstrated "Moth-Eye" technology, which uses a special layer above the LCD panel to significantly reduce glare, internal reflections, and light scattering.
HDTVs with 4K resolution, Smart TV features out in Korea next month
Samsung is preparing to launch 55-inch and 65-inch models of its UHD TV sets next month. Starting off in Korea, the new models will go on sale in June, with a view to releasing it in other markets shortly afterwards, with the two differently-sized 4K-capable TVs following the 85-inch S9 the company released in the country at the beginning of this year.
Amazon's Lovefilm gains more Warner Bros programming
Lovefilm has signed an agreement with Warner Bros International TV Distribution, adding more content to its on-demand roster. The Amazon-owned British subscription streaming service will now offer a number of extra TV series, including seasons one to seven of The West Wing, all nine seasons of One Tree Hill, all seasons of Nip Tuck, and episodes of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.
4K Media Player preloaded with movies, shorts
Sony will be opening up two new Ultra HD televisions for pre-order in the United States on April 21st, alongside an announcement for the company's 4K Media Player and video distribution service. The 55-inch and 65-inch sets, both capable of displaying 4K-resolution content, will be priced considerably less than the $25,000 flagship counterpart, measuring at 84 inches diagonally, but will still retain most of its feature set.
Satellite demonstration channel broadcasts 4K resolution content
The first channel dedicated to broadcasting Ultra HD content has launched in Europe. Operated by Eutelsat Communications, the channel started broadcasting demonstration footage on January 8th, with the aim of helping television manufacturers, satellite services, pay-TV operators and production companies in broadcasting their own content in the format.

Vizio has shown off its lineup of HDTVs for 2013, including a number of large UHD televisions. The new premium-level XVT series, the company's first Ultra High Definition TVs, were shown alongside an enhanced line of M-Series Razor LED Smart TVs, complete with Video On Demand apps and social features.
Measures 85 inches, upscales HD content to UHD resolution
Samsung has revealed it's 4K-capable television at the company's CES press event, one which the electronics giant teased as having an "unprecedented new TV shape and timeless design." The S9 Ultra-HD resolution screen measures 85-inches diagonally, and is fitted inside a freestanding and minimalist metal frame.
To reveal 32-inch UHD monitor, 84-inch UHD touchscreen
ViewSonic has said it will be showing off a number of displays at CES next week, including two UHD screens. An 84-inch 4K display that could be used as an interactive digital sign will be accompanied by a more practical 32-inch 4K-resolution desktop display aimed at cinematographers and graphic designers.
NFC, WiDi, Miracast accompanies content recommendations
LG has revealed more details about its range of televisions for 2013, ahead of CES. Adding to the announcement of Google TV-enabled screens the company has already shown, it has also opted to give more information on features the HDTVs will have, including NFC, Miracast, WiDi, and a new recommendation function.
Displays with 4K resolutions to also be in 50, 55, and 65-inch sizes
Budget HDTV manufacturer Westinghouse plans to showcase a new line of Ultra High Definition (UHD) televisions at CES in January, as in previous years. The new 4K-capable TVs include a 110-inch model as well as more conventionally-sized 50, 55, and 65-inch models, with all UHDTVs being geared up for an early-2013 release.
ICC Purios has 60-inch display, multi-channel recording
Sharp is joining the 4K race with its own Ultra High-Definition television. The "Integrated Cognitive Creation" (ICC) Purios joins the ranks of LG and Sony in putting a 4K screen on the market, and although the 60-inch display doesn't match its 84-inch competitors, Sharp does boast it to be the first 4K TV to be released with a THX-certification.
82-inch Samsung UDTV
Korean electronics giant Samsung is using the 2008 SID symposium in Los Angeles to demonstrate a new LCD TV, formatted to an original resolution standard. While commercial LCD panels are currently limited to HD resolution (up to 1080p, or 1900x1080), the Samsung set is claimed to operate at "ultra-definition," with a maximum resolution of 3840x2160. This is however below the forthcoming 4K standard (4096x1716), and not to be confused with the experimental ultra-high definition resolution (7680x4320).
