Research teams make four atom by one atom wires
Researchers at the ARC Centre of Excellence for Quantum Computation and Communication Technology at the University of New South Wales, in Sydney, Australia have made the narrowest silicon conducting wire to date. It's four atoms wide and one atom tall and is still on par with copper in terms of current carrying capability. Such wires would be key in the development of future quantum computers, in which single atoms act as individual units of computation.
