Suspect found after complaints about missing shipments
A 31-year-old Virginia man, Stephen A. Owens, has been charged with embezzling over 60 Apple products as a sorter at a Springfield UPS facility. Police tell local CBS station WUSA9 that Owens is accused of stealing unopened Apple products -- sometimes by hiding them in his pants -- and then selling them at a discount. Stolen goods included iPhones, iPads, iPods, and MacBooks.
Jersey store already under construction
Three new Apple Stores are on their way to Utah, Virginia, and New Jersey, say ifoAppleStore sources. Job listings for two of the stores appeared in May, but are said to have been intentionally vague or even misleading. One simply mentioned a store in "Salt Lake City;" ifo sources explain that the outlet is coming to the SLC suburb of Farmington, specifically to the Station Park mall near Interstate 15. Another listing pointed to the Virginia store being located in Manassas, but sources claim that it will actually open in Woodbridge, at the new Stonebridge at Potomac Town Center mall, which is still signing its initial tenants.
Should allow AT&T to make significant LTE expansions
AT&T has bought $1.9 billion in 700 MHz B spectrum from Verizon Wireless, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing. AT&T says that the licenses should cover over 42 million people in 18 states: California, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Louisiana, Montana, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wyoming. As a part of the deal, it will also get AWS (Advanced Wireless Services) spectrum in five of those markets.
Idea for install taken from French McDonalds, uses same leasing company
At a newly constructed McDonalds restaurant in Virginia Beach, owner Hugh Fard decided to try something that no other US Mcdonalds has tried -- four booths have iPads that restaurant customers can use for free. McDonalds has no current plans to try out the installation at other locations inside the US, or give the option to other franchisees, and are taking a "wait and see" approach to the success or failure of the program.
Google, Facebook named among better firms
Apple, Amazon, and Microsoft are among companies Greenpeace is criticizing in a new report on sourcing clean power for datacenters. The activist organization has rated a little over a dozen Internet-based companies on factors like their consideration of clean power when picking a location, their advocacy for the idea, and how transparent their clean power strategy is. Apple and Amazon have each been given Fs for their location choices; some examples are Apple's datacenter in North Carolina, and Amazon's presence in Northern Virginia, both of which are said to be dependent on a mix of coal and nuclear power.
Jobs listed on over 300 patents and trademarks
The US Patent and Trademark Office last week launched a special Steve Jobs exhibit at its museum, located in Alexandria, Virginia. The display involves 30 iPhone-shaped panels, which -- with the exception for a description of the exhibit and some photos -- predominantly feature the front pages of patents and trademarks bearing Jobs' name. Throughout his life, Jobs was credited as an inventor or co-inventor on over 300 such documents. As Apple CEO he was famous for micromanaging the details of many products, explaining his USPTO footprint.
Apple gear bought using stolen credit info
The US government has indicted 27 people suspected of belonging to a fraud ring targeting Apple Stores, reports say. The group is accused of making fake credit cards using stolen data bought from the Internet, and in turn fraudulently buying $1 million or more in goods from Apple Stores in 13 states. Products like Macs and gift cards were fenced to bring in cash.

Educational publisher Pearson and the Commonwealth of Virgina have launched a first-of-its-kind full social studies curriculum for K-12 students in a 12-week pilot program that runs entirely on iPads as part of the state's "Beyond Textbooks" initiative. Beginning November 1st, seventh- and ninth-grade students at select schools in Arlington and Pulaski counties as well as the city of Newport News will use iPads to interact with four specially-designed apps tailored to the Virginia educational system's US and world history programs.
