Apple confirms its services not affected by 'Heartbleed' flaw

SSL bug could still be found in Mac servers running PostgreSQL, MacPorts, other add-ons

Apple has confirmed on Thursday that all of its operating systems and key web services, as well as its website and iCloud service, are not affected by the "Heartbleed" SSL flaw that is threatening much of the web. The "Heartbleed" bug, a flaw in the implementation of later versions of OpenSSL -- which is used by many but not all websites to handle secure log-ins and other transactions -- has put as much as two-thirds of the World Wide Web at risk.

Report: iTunes, FaceTime among top NA web services

FaceTime alone responsible for 1.4 percent of all upstream data

A new study from analysis and tracking firm Sandvine shows that some of Apple's web services - in particular, its iTunes stores - are among the most popular such services in North America, and growing rapidly. Since May, iTunes has grown more than 60 percent, from 1.9 percent of all downstream traffic to 3.27 percent. FaceTime, which is considered a wholly upstream service, was ahead of Dropbox and just behind Facebook in terms of upstream traffic.

IFTTT introduces iOS Photos, Reminders compatibility

Productivity app IFTTT (pronounced like 'gift' without the 'g') has released its latest update, version 1.2. IFTTT allows users to enter formulaic commands (called 'Recipes') to complete tasks between apps and web services (called 'Channels'). Version 1.2 has introduced Actions for iOS Photos and Reminders, as well as a new Feedback button within Settings. The background syncing has been improved for iOS 7, and new swipe gestures have been added. IFTTT is available on iTunes for free download.

Amazon opens Redshift data warehouse service as 'preview'

S3 storage also reduced by a quarter

Amazon has launched a new data warehouse service at the Amazon Web Services re:Invent conference today, alongside some price changes to its hosting and processing services. The petabyte-scale service called Amazon Redshift will allow users to "dramatically increase the speed of query performance" when large sets of data are being analyzed, and will work with the same SQL-based tools already being used.

Google updates Cloud Platform services, reduces prices

Introduces Amazon Glacier-style backup system

Google has updated the pricing for its cloud computing services, with the new costs representing a drop of about 20 percent compared to what they were previously. The changes come in just before Amazon holds its re:Invent conference in Las Vegas, a developer event focusing on Amazon Web Services and cloud computing.

Storms in North Virginia takes out Amazon data center

Netflix, Instagram, and other web services were hit by an Amazon Web Services outage. Historic thunderstorms in Northern Virginia caused power outages for Amazon data center in the region, forcing services depending on EC2 from it to be severely affected, with Netflix in particular suffering considerable amounts of downtime.

WebEx expands Mac OS X, Safari 3 support

WebEx epands Mac support

Late last month, Cisco's WebEx division announced expanded Mac OS X support across its suite of business process collaboration applications, saying that Mac use has doubled in the last year. The online collaboration services--including WebEx Meeting Center, WebEx WebOffice, WebEx Event Center, WebEx Training Center, WebEx Sales Center and WebEx Support Center -- now offer cross-platform support for Mac OS X Leopard and Safari 3, as part of Cisco WebEx's ongoing attention to multi-platform support and its growing customer base of Mac users.
