Microsoft CEO vows support for non-Windows Skype
Microsoft chief Steve Ballmer in the media conference following the buyout of Skype repeatedly stressed that the VoIP app would still get support beyond Windows. Having mentioned support in the initial news, he added that it was "fundamental to the proposition of communications" that other platforms like Linux, the Mac, and non-Windows Phone mobile hardware got support. He pointed to the company's "track record" of Office for Mac as well as mobile apps for Android and iOS as examples.

Denon intros N7 iPod dock with AirPlay, CD drive
Electronics maker Denon has introduced the RCD-N7, a new small home entertainment center that integrates a CD player and iPod dock. It supports the popular digital audio formats and will support Windows Media Player 11 for syncing through integrated Wi-Fi. It gets DLNA v1.5 compatibility, along with Apple AirPlay support to push audio from an iOS device or iTunes.

INQ intros two 3G phones
UK phone maker INQ Mobile on Tuesday announced it will soon offer two new 3G handsets that will bring quick access to social networking site Twitter, push Gmail compatibility and the capability to sync via iTunes on PCs and, in a rare instance Macs. The INQ Chat 3G is the provider's first QWERTY phone while the INQ Mini 3G sports the more traditional candybar form factor with number pad. The phone are sold on pre-paid plans, and Twitter compatibility is new to either, as previous handsets from INQ had support for Facebook, Skype and instant messaging programs.

Windows 7 October 22nd
Microsoft today ended speculation and said it would ship Windows 7 on October 22nd. The launch applies to all versions and confirms statements from Acer that it would have the new OS preloaded on its PCs just a day later. Pricing for individual upgrade and full installs hasn't been mentioned.

Rivet 1.2 released
Cynical Peak has released a new update to Rivet, its Mac software for the Xbox 360. The app lets users stream music, photos and videos to a 360 console, which normally requires the use of a PC and Windows Media Player. Mac folder structure is reproduced in the 360's media browser, and content can be pulled not only from iTunes and iPhoto libraries, but user-specified folders.

XPlay 3 released
Mediafour has released XPlay 3, the latest edition of its iPod management software for Windows. The program lets users manage both Mac- and Windows-formatted iPods on a PC, bypassing iTunes through a simple drag-and-drop interface. The new program can also sync content with Windows Media Player 11, and through new Windows Vista compatibility, the Vista Media Center. A right-click option in Windows Explorer lets users send files to either WMP or their iTunes library, the latter of which becomes Mac-compatible.
