WirelessHD 1.1 spec gets faster, mobile

A second ultra-fast wireless standard received an update on Monday as the WirelessHD Consortium put out the 1.1 version of its spec. The new version ups the bandwidth to a minimum 10Gbps and maximum 28Gbps; the extra speed renders it possible to send 3D and 4K video over wireless. Portability is now a major focus as well: it can stream uncompressed video between the source and a handheld such as a smartphone or a media player.

VIZIO to out range of Wireless HD products at CES

LCD HDTV maker VIZIO recently announced it will integrate Wireless HD technology into its products thanks to SiBEAM 60GHz chipsets. The technology will be built into the company's HDTVs, Blu-ray players and HDMI adapters. The company is also in the process of joining the WirelessHD association, which is required in order to incorporate the technology into its products. VIZIO and SiBEAM will show off the new LED-backlit HDTVs in the new XVT Pro lineup later this week at CES, with SiBEAM also having a Blu-ray player on hand.

WHDI spec is official, gains 1080p support

The WHDI wireless HD video standard that uses 5GHz, Wi-Fi-based technology has been finalized recently. The technology was found by chip designer Amimon and is one of at least four technologies aimed to bring wireless HD video distribution in the home. The technology will allow sending 1080p HD video at 60Hz refresh rates and 12-bit color depth up to 100 feet away and through multiple walls. Maximum data rates are said to be fixed at 3Gbps using a 40MHz channel.
