Plans delayed from early-spring promise

Despite Sony Ericsson's promise that its Xperia X10 handset would be updated with Android 2.3 by late spring, the company has confirmed that it will not meet the original goal. In a blog post, the company suggests it is now planning to begin the roll-out sometime in the beginning of August. Users will still be able to take advantage of software functionality close to that of the newer Xperia Arc handset.

Promised to deliver 2.3 by "late spring"

A short post on the Sony Ericsson blog notes that an update to Android 2.1 is available for AT&T Xperia X10 users. The company has been criticized for being slow to roll out Android upgrades for the X10, offering none in all of 2010. An update for the X10 and X8 that provided additional multi-touch features was released in February.

X10 Mini Pro to run Android 2.3

A new set of pictures has emerged of the forthcoming Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini Pro have surfaced. Following on from the leaked images in January this year, the new images confirm that the device is indeed running Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). Further, it appears that the device is also running a revised version of Sony Ericssonís UXP launcher, the corner-driven UI that appears on the original Xperia X10 and X10 Mini Pro.

OTA releases bring multi-touch and ANT+ support

Sony Ericsson has reportedly begun pushing updates to its Xperia X10 and X8 handsets. The X10 release primarily focuses on multi-touch abilities, enabling users to take advantage of pinch-to-zoom functionality in apps such as Google Maps and the browser. The smaller handset, the X8, now supports ANT+ for communication with bicycle computers, heart rate motors and other wireless sensors.

Leaked images allegedly show one of Sony Ericsson's latest smartphone projects, which is believed to represent the successor to the Xperia X10 Mini Pro. The images, which were posted on SEMC Blog, show a very similar form to the Mini Pro, but with a few stylish tweaks and new buttons below the display.

Dell Streak mini-tablet, white smartphones reach Best Buy

No white iPhone, but phones from Sony and Samsung

Consumers desperate for a white smartphone -- or a first look at Dell's Streak 5-inch mini-tablet -- have new options at Best Buy, a report on Engadget has found. Starting October 24th, customers will be able to reserve white Sony Ericsson Xperia X10s, white Samsung Fascinates or the not-white Streaks with a $50 deposit, all powered by various versions of the Android OS. The smartphones require service by AT&T (for the Xperia) or Verizon (the Fascinate); cellular service is optional with the Streak but is provided by AT&T.

Sony Ericsson says X10s get Android 2.1 soon

Sony Ericsson UK has announced, via Twitter, that it will send out the Android 2.1 update to its XPERIA X10 handsets in September. Such a release was rumored back in April, and would upgrade the phone's existing Android 1.6 OS. It should get 720p video recording and DLNA media sharing support over the local network at the same time.

Vodafone UK to get Xperia X10 Mini, Samsung Galaxy S

Android smartphones expected this summer

Vodafone UK appears to be set to launch several Android-based handsets, the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini and Samsung Galaxy S i900, along with Samsung's Wave. Each of the devices appears to retain their standard OS layouts, without the Vodafone 360 services that are preloaded on the company's Vodafone-branded 845 smartphone also based on Android.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 due at AT&T in August?

An unofficial but allegedly trusted source has revealed wireless provider AT&T will begin stocking Sony Ericsson's XPERIA X10 smartphone at the start of August. This latest report contradicts an earlier one that the device will arrive at AT&T this spring. This spells bad news for AT&T, as the X10 is expected to ship with the outdated Android 1.6 software preloaded instead of 2.1.
