Apple addresses XSan, Lion RAID upgrading issues

Apple has posted several new articles in its support database, including two that address specific issues. One deals with upgrading to Lion from Snow Leopard from a RAID volume, while the other explains some unexpected XSan Admin behavior when inconsistent or missing-name server records are used. XSan users also got a tutorial on advanced mounting options, while a fourth deals with restoring Lion Server from a Time Machine backup.

Xsan 2.2.2 fixes filesystem, memory problems

Rare server software update

Apple has released Xsan 2.2.2, a rare update to its storage area network software. The patch is specifically labeled the FileSystem Update for 10.6, and fixes problems with filesystem reliability as well as "low-memory client behavior." It applies only to copies of Xsan running on Snow Leopard clients or servers. To go with it, Apple has posted a new Xsan Uninstaller.

Active Storage outs ActiveSAN Xserve replacement for Macs

ActiveSAN officially announced, due in the spring

Active Storage has made its leaked XServe replacement officially known on Monday, calling the metadata controller appliance ActiveSAN. Apple's Xserve are discontinued as of today as well, and the ActiveSAN is being endorsed by Apple. Active Storage CEO Alex Grossman said the product is easy to use and offers more than just generic server functionality for Xsan and StorNext installations.

Apple planning to drop Xsan, Final Cut Server?

Lion could hold last Server release for Mac OS X

Apple may be ready to discontinue both Xsan and Final Cut Server, "reliable" sources are quoted as saying. Although the company has, allegedly, yet to make a final decision, Hardmac also suggests that based on its information, there is little chance of Apple changing its mind. It may in fact be preparing to drop Mac OS X Server, though this would only be after a release for Mac OS X Lion, according to claims.

Apple exec posts, retracts message backing server software

Eric Zelenka -- Apple's senior worldwide marketing manager for server, storage and management products -- has posted and then deleted a forum message giving a clue to the company's future enterprise plans, reports note. "Apple remains committed to the development of server products, technologies and services," Zelenka wrote at the XSanity forums on Friday. "Today’s [Xserve] announcement does not impact the future of Xsan or server software on Mac OS X."

Leopard, Snow Leopard versions available

Beyond a Mail Services update, Apple is also targeting the enterprise this week with updates to Xsan, its storage area network software. The v2.2.1 FileSystem Update is said to include "general" filesystem fixes, as well as particular corrections for reliability and the cvfsck repair utility. Editions are available for both Leopard and Snow Leopard.

Apple is distributing a collection of v2.2 updates for Xsan, its SAN (storage-area network) management software. These include patches for the administrative component, in both Leopard and Snow Leopard varieties. Each corrects similar flaws, in areas such as listing computers connected to a SAN, or displaying when LUNs have been truncated.

Kroll Ontrack offers data recovery services for Xsan

Kroll Ontrack has announced expanded data recovery services for Apple’s Xsan 2 enterprise-class storage area network (SAN) systems. Using recently-developed technology, the company's agents can now recover data from an Xsan server that has suffered volume corruption. Previously, Xsan file-system data recovery was limited to hardware-based failures. Enterprises servers suffering from volume corruption required reinitialization of the servers and potential loss of data.

Apple Xsan 2.1 updates

Apple today released updates to Xsan, its enterprise-class storage area network solution. Xsan 2.1, Xsan 2.1 Admin and Xsan 2.1 Uninstaller updates have been posted to both Apple Downloads and Software Update. Patch notes reveal that this relatively minor release focuses on delivering an overall improvement in speed and filesystem reliability, along with a multitude of small bug fixes. It is recommended for all users running Xsan on Mac OS X 10.5 or Mac OS X Server 10.5 or later.

Apple sets out sessions, labs for WWDC 08

WWDC 08 sessions, labs

Apple has revealed the list of sessions and labs for its WWDC 08 conference, scheduled for June 9th to the 13th in San Francisco. Over 60 events are planned, and people can now register for the conference at a standard cost of $1,295, or $1,694 with an ADC Select membership. Sessions are divided into iPhone, Mac and IT categories: some iPhone programs include "3D Graphics for iPhone using OpenGL ES," "Introduction to the iPhone Development Tools," and "Utilizing Offline Data in Safari."
