Global Verge wins $43m ruling against Zer01
Last Thursday, a District Court judge in Nevada ordered Zer01, a company that promised unlimited voice and data cell phone service, to pay $43 million to marketing firm and former partner Global Verge. The judgment was based on breach of contract, long-term profit losses and tortuous interference with contractual relations, said lawyer Brian Hardy, who represents Global Verge. Despite the ruling, Hardy remained doubtful Global Verge will collect much, if any, of the $43 million.
Zer01 strips websites
Despite announcing a launch of its unlimited wireless voice and data service on July 1st, Zer01 has yet to deliver either to customers. The company is in fact reversing course and has quietly removed information from its website, which happened in the past few days, following a recent ComputerWorld report that questioned the validity of Zer01's claims. Zer01's offer was to have included unlimited talk and data as well as text messaging for just $70 per month, all of which would be contract-free.
Zer01 Now Live
Zer01 today kicked off the launch of its self-titled Zer01 Mobile cellphone service. Roughly as promised, the service uses custom software and a unique network trick to funnel both data and voice through a VoIP system rather than the usual network, bypassing most of the costs associated with running a usual cellular plan. To exploit the uncapped data, it now has built-in access to NetMovies downloads from the company's front-end app.
Zer01 Communications has announced it will be displaying its Zer01 Mobile unlimited voice and data mobile plan at the CTIA Wireless 2009 convention in Las Vegas (booth #6363). The new internet pre-paid plan requires no contracts or commitments to sign up and is being offered to mobile users at $70 a month. According to CEO Ben Piilani, Zer01 Mobile uses Veritable Mobile Convergence (VMC) technology from the Unified Technologies Group, that enables data transmitting and voice communications through a VoIP system and onto a virtual private network that accesses the internet.
