Cook: Apple has made 30 acquisitions thus far in fiscal 2014

Most remain undisclosed, but details on Beats buyout rationale emerge

Apple CEO Tim Cook disclosed during Tuesday's conference call with analysts that Apple had acquired 30 companies and/or their talent over the course of the past nine months, back to the beginning of the fiscal year which began last October. Of these, less than half have been publicly revealed -- though a few of the higher-profile buyouts, such as the record-setting Beats Electronics and Music deal, have made headlines. On the topic of the latter company, Cook shared a bit more detail on the thinking behind it.

Cellular carriers Sprint and T-Mobile have agreed upon an outline for a proposed merger that would see Sprint acquiring its rival company for around $32 billion. Sources tell the Wall Street Journal that Sprint would pay about $40 a share for T-Mobile. The deal would further consolidate the cellular marketplace, reducing the number of large carriers to three if the merger is able to pass federal regulation.

A lot of eyebrows were raised when rumors of Apple's purported acquisition of Beats Electronics surfaced over the past few days. Until now, Apple is a company that has been known for making relatively small, targeted, acquisitions that have often eventually found their way into shipping Apple-engineered products as technological enhancements giving it a competitive edge. With around $150 billion in cash and liquid assets, all eyes have been on Apple for some time, waiting to see what it might splash out some of that cash on. No one outside of Apple could see the acquisition of Beats Electronics coming, and certainly not for what seems a somewhat hefty $3.2 billion.

Acquisition, if true, would be Apple's largest buyout ever by nearly 10x

In what could be a rumor intended to manipulate stock prices, the Financial Times is reporting that Apple is planning to buy the maker of the popular (though not well-regarded by audiophiles) Beats headphones and Beats Music streaming service for $3.2 billion. If true, the deal would be by far the largest-ever acquisition by Apple. Coincidentally, the report's alleged price for Beats -- more than three times higher than its valuation -- is the exact same amount paid by Google for Nest.

AT&T CEO and chairman Randall Stephenson is said to have met with EU Telecoms Commissioner Neelie Kroes at the World Economic Forum, with a possible acquisition of the UK carrier reportedly discussed.

Following its failed attempt to acquire T-Mobile, AT&T has begun a reorganization of its leadership, according to Reuters. Yahoo sued by shareholders

Microsoft's attempted acquisition of Yahoo! has gotten a bit more contentious. Bloomberg reports that a group of Yahoo shareholders have jointly filed a lawsuit against the search company for rejecting the $45 billion offer from Microsoft. Michigan's Wayne County Employees' Retirement System, which owns a relatively small 13,000 block of shares of Yahoo claims in the suit that the company failed to enter into substantial negotiations with Microsoft. "The board of directors is continually evaluating all of its strategic options. Our board believes the Microsoft proposal substantially undervalues Yahoo," Yahoo spokesperson Diana Wong told Bloomberg.
