Comcast serving injected JavaScript ads through public Wi-Fi hotspots

Provider stating that ads placed as a courtesy, reminiscent of BitTorrent throttling issue

It appears that Comcast has decided to serve advertisements to people that connect their devices to the more than 3.5 million public Wi-Fi hotspots spread throughout the United States. Ars Technica discovered that the Internet service provider (ISP) has been injecting JavaScript advertisements into websites using the Xfinity Wi-Fi services by altering the data stream when webpages are called.

The National Security Agency (NSA) may have been using cookies from web advertisements in order to track individuals, according to a report. A PREF cookie, a unique identifier typically used in Google's advertising system, has apparently been used by the NSA alongside location data, in order to locate individuals of interest to the agency.

Instagram is preparing to introduce advertising to the photograph sharing service and image editing app for the first time. A report claiming that it will be including advertisements within its app comes at the same time as the Facebook-owned image and video-sharing social network has broken the 150 million monthly active user barrier.

Google puts stock Android keyboard on Google Play

Google has added its own keyboard to Google Play. The downloadable Google Keyboard will allow users of Android 4.0 and above to use the same keyboard as used in stock Android, replacing ones used in manufacturer-supplied Android user interfaces. Gesture typing, error correction, word prediction, and voice typing has made the transition, along with dictionaries for 26 languages and accompanying keyboard layouts, according to the Android Google+ page.
