PayPal Here for iOS receives update
PayPal announced today that its point-of-sale app, PayPal Here, has been updated. The app allows users to facilitate payment transactions on their iPad, iPhone or iPod touch with its accompanying card reader, accepting debit and credit cards. The latest version of PayPal Here now includes a dynamic search tool, a streamlined custom inventory entry system, as well as the ability to swipe cards at any moment during the order process. Enhanced cart views and simplified order entry fields for quicker sales processing are also included. PayPal Here for iPhone and iPod touch, with a separate version for iPad, is free to download, and require iOS 6 in conjunction with a free PayPal card reader.
Square notifying users of upcoming card reader replacement
Square, a mobile payment service, has begun to notify its existing customers that they can receive the latest Square reader for free. The redesigned Square card reader is 45 percent thinner than the original, and will be replacing the previous model as the standard device, with the former to be no longer supported. Users can receive their new Square reader for free by signing into their web dashboard.
System is iPad-based, offers portable and modular POS system
Square, the company that has offered various credit-card payment systems for Apple's mobile devices, is now partnering with the iPhone maker to bring a new Point-of-Sale (POS) system to market that will be featured in Apple retail stores. The Square Stand turns an iPad into both a credit-card terminal and full POS system that works with Square's Register app and external devices such as cash drawers, receipt printers and barcode scanners along side the payment card reader. The $300 device will begin shipping on July 8 from Square's website, and be available for sale at Apple's US stores on July 9.
Secure CAC, PIV, CIV smart card reader
Reading personal smart cards of the type used by government and military personnel as well as large corporations, Thursby Systems has combined a $150 plug-in card reader compatible with the 30-pin dock connector used by iOS devices with a free app that leverages two-factor authentication to create the PKard Reader kit for secure authentication. The solution allows access to secure web portals but requires no changes to back-end servers in order to work.
Swivels up to 180-degrees maximising port space
Elecom Japan has released a USB memory card reader that is capable of rotating and swiveling up to 180 degrees. The MR-C25 can allows a user to flip it around in order to free up access to a second USB port as required. The device is compatible with microSD, SD and SDXC cards.
Culore Multi-Card Reader supports 66 memory cards
Vantec Thermal Technologies has announced two new card-readers for its line of computer accessories, the Culore Multi-Card Reader and Multi-Card Reader & Hub. Both devices support 66 different types of memory cards including SD, Memory Stick, or Compact Flash, and include a built-in two-in-one USB 2.0 carrying-strap/cable. The Culore Multi-Card Reader features five dedicated slots, transfer rates of up to 480Mbps, and support for high speed cards. The device comes in three different colors including pink, blue or green.
Lian Li products announced
Lian Li Industrial has released two new products, the EX-P3A/B HDD bracket cooling kit, for adding cooling to an internal hard disk drive, and the CR-26A/B card reader kit, a 3.5-inch bay replacement providing multiple card-reader technology. The drive-cooling bracket is a-5.25 inch bay kit that holds a 3.5-inch drive and utilizes aluminum in direct contact with the drive for heat dissipation. It repeats the SATA connector on the disk to protect it during reinstalls or when the drive is transported between computers. It is available in Silver (EX-P3A) and black (EX-P3B).
Simplifi USB hub for iPod
Griffin Technology today announced Simplifi, a desktop device that combines functions of an iPod/iPhone dock, USB hub, and media card reader. iPods can be docked, charged, and synced with the Simplifi, and two additional USB 2.0 ports are available for other devices. Various digital media cards are supported, including Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, SD, SDHC, xD, and CompactFlash.
Sonnet 21-in-one reader
Sonnet today unveiled its new 21-in-one Multimedia Memory Card Reader and Writer ExpressCard/34 product, allowing users to read information from and write information to over 21 different media card types. The card, designed to sit flush with the edge of a MacBook Pro, the reader will take media from MP3 players, digital cameras and picture frames, cell phones and other devices that use Memory Sticks, MMC, SD, XD, among others. Sonnet is selling the device for $30, and requires a MacBook Pro running Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger or later.
