Earphones can sense pulse of wearer, pass data to smartphone app
Earbuds capable of sensing the wearer's heart rate from LG have passed through the FCC, ahead of a possible release in the United States later this year. The Heart Rate Earphones, audio devices that appeared at CES in January alongside the Lifeband Touch, are able to monitor the wearer's pulse and feed the data back to the wearer through an accompanying app.
AT&T now selling new Moshi case for iPhone 5c, earbud headphones
Moshi, a mobile accessories company, announced the availability of its two new products - Mythro earbuds and the iGlaze Remix case for iPhone 5c - that are now available on ATT.com and in select AT&T stores. Released in anticipation of the holiday shopping season, the new product additions join the already existing Moshi offerings available through AT&T, such as its origami-style iPad case and bubble-free iPhone screen protector.
Uses biofeedback to deliver customized coaching
Sports and fitness app makers Pear Sports are now offering a free app that interfaces with a $150 kit sold at Apple retail stores to help users achieve fitness or weight-loss goals using personalized coaching from top personal coaches based on the biofeedback the kit sends the app. The product includes a Bluetooth heart monitor, a pair of Pear earbuds for listening to music and the coaching, and the app for iPhone or iPod Touch. The app provides real-time feedback and encouragement using data gained from the heart rate monitor.
Return to 'product as hero' styling in new commercials
Apple on Friday debuted a clutch of new television commercials, with a trio of new spots promoting the new iPhone 5 and one devoted to the new EarPods earbuds that now come with the iPhone and iPod Touch (and are available separately for $29). All four of the ads feature a narrator (Jeff Daniels) extolling the virtue of the highlighted features with a jaunty musical background in the style that has become a signature for Apple and was described by SVP of Worldwide Marketing Phil Schiller in a recent court appearance as a "product as hero" approach.

Higher-end model adds non-metallic drivers
Audio gear maker NuForce is showcasing two new models of stereo earbuds aimed at mobile device users, offering the larger but lower-powered NE-600X earbuds for budget-conscious consumers and an improved version of its existing NE-700X called the NE-770X that features non-metallic drivers that are acoustically inert for natural response in a lightweight polycarbonate enclosure that the company says is ideal for mobile users.
Alternative headphones and a place to keep them
Tired of earbud tangling, Digital Group Audio (DGA) has brought its Zipbuds to market, an alternative headset for iPods and other devices that uses a zipper-integrated braided nylon cabling resist tangles and create a custom fit. Meanwhile, Extended Access has unveiled the BudCase, a keychain case to keep earbuds (or USB drives) handy when not in use and featuring a magnetic fastener.
Rise in hearing damage led to development
Concerned amidst reports that one in five children are suffering hearing loss in part due to unsafe earbud use, Future Sonics -- a long-time maker of professional earbuds for on-stage, recording and personal use -- has developed the Atrio Special Edition (ASE) earbud line, being introduced at Airport Wireless stores. The headphones use proprietary drivers to reproduce low frequencies (<150Hz) with more clarity, reducing the need to increase volume to "hear" the music or block background sound.
Grass Roots Collection of iPhone cases, earbuds
In addition to its recently announced Crystal Clear Collection, iWave has also introduced the new eco-friendly Grass Roots Collection. The series of iPhone and iPod accessories is claimed to be environmentally friendly, constructed with recyclable materials such as plastic, wood and bamboo. The new products include headphones, earphones and cases, with each designed around a rustic wood-grain theme geared for nature enthusiasts.
Over 15 new products
Macally has launched a slew of new products in concert with the ongoing CES expo. The first is the AmpTune, a stereo speaker system for iPods and iPhones that offers a choice of vertical or horizontal docking. Handhelds charge while docked. The FMport is a full-channel FM transmitter for iPods and iPhones that includes a remote control. The PowerGo is a three-in-one battery charger, with an internal battery that takes power from AC, car or USB sources then transfers it to Apple devices via USB.

Designers at Zagg audio think they've found a niche in the crowded market for iPhone earbuds: eliminating tangles. Z.buds are equipped with stiffer, yet sturdier nylon cables that are not likely to bunch together into a tangled mess, the company says. A quick hands-on demo at CES shows the technology does appear to work -- the Z.buds were hard to tangle even when wadded up.
BudFits for iPod/iPhone
Innovelis on Thursday announced the release of BudFits, an around-the-ear product that prevents iPod and iPhone earbuds from falling out during physical activities like skateboarding, snowboarding, running, cycling, and other high-energy activities. BudFits are soft, rubber ear-wraps that snap onto an Apple's ubiquitious earbuds. They prevent earbuds from falling out and eliminate the need to tightly wedge the earbuds into the ear canal -- in addition to maximizing comfort and utility. Budfits retail between $9 and $10 at retailers such as Amazon and work with al iPod and iPhone earbuds.
Redesigned BudCase ships
Extended Access today released an updated design of BudCase, its earbud keychain case made for Apple's iPhone. The BudCase is designed to provide quick access to earbuds any time on-the-go, with the latest revision boasting a lighter and more compact form factor with a slightly increased width to accommodate a greater variety of earbuds. BudCase works with most earbuds -- including those shipped with Apple's iPhone -- and is available in black, red, or blue for $15.
Radius iPod nano Earbuds
Japanese device maker Radius finished its week with the launch of the radStrap NOISE CANCEL, a unique set of earbuds for owners of the third-generation iPod nano. The lanyard headphones hang around the neck like the official Apple lanyard earphones but are driven through the dock connector rather than the minijack. This both increases the output volume but also lets the radStrap achieve its namesake active noise canceling through its attached in-canal earbuds: up to 82 percent of outside noise is blocked, by Radius' estimates.
